    Hello

Sounds like they are very lucky children :)

    How old are they?

From researching for myself before I have found October to be a pricey month (might just have been the year I looked though)

Could it be done for 3K? my initial response is no. But it would be interesting to find out if it could be done!! Do you have dates for half term holidays next year you can post on here?

Also do you have any airmiles/avios or equivalent?

Hi, many thanks for your reply and sorry it's taken me so long to respond. My kids are 22, 19, 15 and 14 at the moment (I started young!) The eldest two have said they will contribute towards their air fare if necessary (one is working, other at uni) so I do have that option to increase our budget.

I don't have the term dates for October half term next year yet, but this year it is from Saturday 27th October, so if it is as late again it will obviously be going into early November.

Unfortunately, I don't have any airmiles or anything like that... we've actually only been abroad as a family once since I got divorced and that was when I won a competition, so this would be a major treat for us.

5 People for £3000. It will be tough.

It will be £450 each for flights, so that's £2250, leaving only £750 or $260 per night before tax.

A room for 2 people is around that at the cheaper times of year, so trying to find a room for 5, will be even more difficult. Looking now, the Eastgate Tower, which is a suite hotel is way over $400 per night..

Thanks for that... so I'm really looking at a minimum of £3700 for 3 nights? Ok, that's a little disappointing but good to have a figure to aim for, we might just be able to do it.

Two things: you will probably find your term dates for several years ahead on the local authority's website. And what is your student child going to do, miss a bit of Uni? (Not saying they shouldn't, just be aware, I know it matters a lot more for some courses than it does for others!)

Uni gets a half term break? What for? They've barely started before the end of October. :rotfl:

(Actually I know some start mid September, but still. We never got a half term break!)

hi muddymouse - i strongly recommend renting an apartment through airbnb.com and similar sites
1 - it is way cheaper
2 - you're not disturbed by cleaners every day
3 - you save money on tips (it is customary to tip the maids, porters etc) and you will save a lot of money on meals by cooking at home/taking packed lunches - most hotels rooms don't even have a small fridge!

Just make sure (I'll say it before Mark pops up) that it's a LEGAL apartment rental, and many aren't - I don't know about airbnb, but don't be fooled by it being on TripAdvisor or having reviews or things like that.

Not all hotel rooms have a fridge, true (can't remember if the Cosmo did or not) but if you look at 'suites' in hotels you may find you do. Holiday Inn, for example, we had a couples of nights in 'suites' which had two double beds, fridge, microwave and coffee maker. If you can get an extra bed in one of them then you're sorted - not sure if they would or not.

Cheers Sue! You know me so well!!! :)
Airbnb are just like everyone else. Apartment rentals are still illegal for under 30 days in NYC, and it is up to the owner to ensure that it is legal. The pitfalls are as follows - the owners rarely check, and just want to make money. airbnb tripadvisor etc etc all want to make money, so will advertise that property with no checks, neighbours get annoyed with tourists in their buildings, and report it to 311, they come around, evict the people staying, and you end up with nowhere to stay.
Worst case scenario is that the place doesn't exist.

Cosmopolitan Hotel doesn't have a fridge in the room. Most NYC hotels also don't allow you to have an "extra bed" in the room.

It may be cheaper overall to look at 2 rooms, rather than 1 big room for you all to stay in.

Right... look after yourself everyone, I'm off on holiday... to somewhere other than NYC  First time for everything eh?!
