I got a OBE (out before Easter) way back in 83. My laddo is at a specialist college and they are off. Thats my knowledge of "UNI" sorted.. Did you get your killers tickets ? Most apartments in NYC are being booked and sold illegally for short term lets .If they are even there in the first place. Impossible to say how many because it is unclear how many are out there. But most is a good number for me (without real education) M4rk where ya goin ? enjoy
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world
  • hi there, joining the party late.
looking for some info. i am planning nyc, next october, for maybe 5 nights flying from glasgow with my 15 year old.

any ideas on budget for this? need to start saving now. would like to stay fairly central
  • For any one wanting Kitchen facilities and extra beds in NYC, we have stayed in Beacon Hotel on UES they had a full kitchen and we had a one bed apartment so they had a sofa bed in living room, this was also the case at the Marmara hotel on UES, again a full kitchen and room to sleep 4 in the one bed apartment, both were great in their own way ( locations not right in the thick of it but good to live like a "local").
I am off to NYC in about 2 weeks and we are staying at the Affinia Dumont in Murray hill area, again we will have a full kitchen.
There are a lot of hotels that have this arrangement and its much safer than ending up in an illegal apartment ( you could end up being evicted and with nowhere to go!)
So to the way to go is a hotel with suites ( but check what they have in they way of actual kitchens if that is impportant to you and if you intend going on a tight budget, the more equipment you have in the kitchen the more supermarket meals you can cook thus saving money. Their supermarkets are fab, we are Vegans( hence our desire for a kitchen) we can get vegan food from a regular supermarket!! and the choice for carnivores is out of this world!!, plus you feel like you "live there if only for a while, cooking in your little New York "apartment":)
I know most people eat out ( we eat out once a day) but it can add up and if you are on a budget......... Personally it worries me when people go to NY on a very tight budget, it is a place that begs you to spend money and all the tipping you have to do etc. (Everyone in the service industry needs tips to make up their minimum wage jobs and living and anywhere in the 5 boroughs is more expensive than over here).
  • It's hard to predict a budget so far in advance, as the currency rates, fuel rates, taxes etc can change.

Flying from Glasgow your only direct option is United into Newark. Although you can do connecting flights with the likes of BA, KLM, Aer Lingus etc. I'd say £500-ish per person on flights would be fairly average from Glasgow just now. Just keep an eye on flight prices on a website like Kayak.

Hotels can be in any budget range to be honest. If by fairly central you mean midtown Manhattan, then I'd be prepared to budget between $200-300 per night for a room, depending on you dates. Don't rule out staying somewhere like Long Island City (part of Queens that looks onto Manhattan) if you want cheaper accommodation. I'll be in New York in a couple of weeks time and booked at the Country Inn in Long Island City, as I wanted to keep my costs down. A room cost $150 including all taxes and includes breakfast. It's just a 10 minute subway ride from that hotel to midtown Manhattan.

The subway is great and an easy way to get around New York and you'll find everything is spread out over the city, not contained to midtown. A weekly subway ticket currently costs just $29, which allows travel to anywhere in New York.

As for spending money, food and drink can be as cheap or expensive as you want them to be. Just make sure you budget for anything big you'd like to do that may cost that bit extra, like taking in a show on Broadway or going to a sporting event.

looks like a bargain to me, makes me chuckle that they claim the hotel in NY is described as "at times square" when its 12 blocks away

  • Yeah, I did check that. Glad it's a "bargain"! We are paying for it tomorrow, just wanted to double check, such a large amount of money (we've never been on a "big" holiday, it's big to us anyway!)
