Hey all, am trying to book a car from JFK to manhattan as a present for friends going to NY. Had a look at sites recommended, but all of them seem to need a US telephone number. Am I just being stoopid?
    All suggestions appreciated.

I have used carmel limos and they have always been good. I only ever give my mobile no and email address. Not bad a price and it includes the tip so they won't have to bother paying that. In fact I booked them for my daughter in June and at the end of the journey she went to tip the driver and he actually refused saying the tip was included in the price. Impressive!

By the way, I think it's a really nice idea.

I wasn't given much choice with the pass, chief holiday organiser sorted it!

Did you really need to make my quote so damn large. You could have easily snipped my quote to only re-quote the bit you were replying to.

Yes. We stayed here, also in March funnily enough though it was 2009 so not very recently.

For us, as tourists, taking our children for the first time, it was perfect. They loved stepping outside the hotel straight into the lights and hubbub of Times Square. We absolutely loved having two separate rooms, a kitchenette, two TVs, and basically loads of room to spread about. Previously I'd stayed in a hotel room that was so small it literally had a bed an that was it - we had to keep the suitcase in the bath :D so the Doubletree was a very nice surprise compared to that!

It was clean, tidy, nicer than we expected and cost £125 per night (total) which I considered a bargain. The other option we looked at was the Radio City Apartments but that was more than twice the price.

Yes, it is anonymous but frankly I don't go to NYC to make friends with people if I'm with my family, so I couldn't care less about that.

    I would highly recommend it.

Thanks for your reply. How far away is the hotel from JFK and what method of transport did you use to get there? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Sorry, but I can't help with this question, as both visits to NYC we came in via Newark. We used Carmel Cars and liked the service, though. Pretty sure there is a great guide to getting to central Manhattan in post one of this excellent thread, though.

Manhattan is around 17 miles away from JFK. Depending how much you want to spend and how many there is of you and what luggage you have, depends on the best way to get to the hotel from there.

Solo / Couples, I'd encourage going with public transport, if you have children with you, it is probably easier going with a car service or a taxi.

Car Services are cheaper, around $40 from JFK pre booked, while a taxi is a fixed rate of $52. Prices don't include toll (around $5) or tip (which should be 20%)

If you go with Carmel, follow that link which shows you how you get grab a coupon, and get $4 off the price, making it $36. (Though ensure you tip on the amount before the coupon!)

    Hope that helps.

On the amount per day subject. What you think you will spend then double it.
I never shop in NY either.

You can do NY on the cheap if you want especially just doing the tourist stuff as there are loads of free things, the subway is brilliant for $29 a week. Its the wonderful restaurants and bars that always cane my pocket (this is absolutely part of the experience for me although I accept it wont be for others).

    Hi
Re the Macy's discount all visitors to the store get a card for 10% when you show a passport. The same for Bloomingdales. You need to go to the visitor centre.

I personally wouldnt book airport transfer as I imagine there would be a wait for people to board and various hotel stops on the way. If you don't mind the time you get to the hotel then thats ok.

Re the price it does sound v good. With excellent flight times too.

Are your flights MAN - LHR LHR to NYC or direct from Manchester to NYC?

I have seen some under 800GBP on Ba website but that means flying to london first - quite a few 4* on the website like the Empire for 761 etc, but the connection makes it cheaper.
