Thanks for replying so quickly, I did mean to emphasise that I needed somewhere child/family friendly as I know there is nothing worse than having an adult night out spent with other peoples kids!!! My husband is Italian and has been to NY twice before and really wants to go back there for his big birthday. My major issue has been what if anything we can do in the evenings with a child. I will continue to look into it and hopefully can find something that accomodates. I have had quotes from Le Parker Meridien hotel for a room to sleep 3 for £1700 and BA do flights for £1800 which seems to be the average cost for when we want to go. Finding something appropriate to do on NYE anywhere with kids is hard but when your birthday is New Years day you have to try! Thanks again for your honesty
Hello
Sounds lovely
I have been twice in December from Boxing day onwards (December birthday) have you tried looking for packages? In my experience packages at that time of year have been a good option. And if you can hold out and book closer to the time you may get a decent deal.
We booked 5 weeks before departure in Dec 2011. Left on Boxing day returned on 31st (only because of needing to be back) and it cost approx 1000GBP and was a 4* hotel.0 -

Hi, Yes there are lots along 5th Avenue near the Empire State Building (opposite side of the road) and further down towards Union square.
Have fun - I love staying in the same location.0 -

Firstly, you're not staying at 29th East, 29 Street.
You're staying at 29, East 29th Street, in other words the Thirty Thirty Hotel, I mean Hotel Lola, I mean King & Grove Manhattan.
Have you heard of google street view? It's a good way to walk around the streets.. On both 29th and 30th street there isn't much, but on the avenues there is plenty of places for tacky tourist rip offs..

bb69 thanks for the reply. I have looked at packages and there is so much out there that I thought I'd try here for some real reviews/advice. It sounds like you got a great deal last year and hopefully we can get something good too if we go with it. Think I might try and pick a couple of hotels and email them re restaurant availability/deal on nye. I've heard there are fireworks in central park so maybe that would be a family friendly option
Will let you know how I get on!0 -

Personally what I'd do with a young child, if there are fireworks in Central Park, is get a hotel with views, book on that basis, talk to the hotel, and watch from the comfort of the hotel room. Then celebrate Daddy's birthday on New Year's Day.
BTW, when we were there one summer, long ago, there were fireworks on Staten Island, which we watched from Battery Park. Just a nice distance, from my POV (I don't much like loud bangs!!!)Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Thanks savvy sue, just been discussing what to do with my husband and he had the same thought as you! So now trying to pick a suitable hotel with views of the right area, thanks again0

Just thinking outside the box ........ would first night Boston be better. Loads more family things going on all day, with fireworks over the harbour at midnight. Not NYC but still very good, we went in 2001. We have also done NYE in NYC and it was kind of a little full on. Glad we did it, but I don't think I would punish myself again.
Happy Holidays

Yup... there are fireworks in Central Park, you're not penned in at all. Try and find that restaurant now, which there are plenty on the Upper West Side, and you're all sorted.

Hi
Just booked a last(ish) minute trip to New York for my upcoming 40th next month
I am looking for recommendations for somewhere nice to have a meal for my birthday; perhaps something with a nice view/setting.
ThanksMassive thanks to all who contribute on the MSE forums, especially on grabbit and competition boards0
