You only have 1 day in Manhattan. Well, first thing is to group things sensibly, if you did them in that order, you wouldn't get them done. Also, why see NYC from up high twice, in such a short limited amount of time.

From Newark get the PATH and through to WTC.

Unfortunately for you, Ground Zero no longer exists, and it is now called the World Trade Center Memorial. Unfortunately more, as you've not planned, there will be no tickets, but if you turn up early enough, there may be some released on the day. If you are lucky, you'll spend about 45 mins here.

From there, walk down through to Battery Park, and head on the Staten Island Ferry, and you'll see the Statue of Liberty. Head off the ferry, straight back on, and you're in Manhattan. This takes an hour, so if you started at WTC at around 9am, it is around 11am now.

Walk up from the ferry terminal, hit Wall Street, head up and see the Charging Bull. Hop on the Subway, and head to Rockefeller Centre, and up to the TOTR. Once you've done that, you can walk through to Times Square. It's probably around lunchtime now, and in a tourist trap of a location for food, so hit the subway, head to somewhere else for lunch IMO.

So, it's now 2pm, and you have the rest of the day... whatcha gonna do?

    Hi,

    Thank you for the information!

I've been lucky enough to get a ticket to the 9/11 Memorial as it seems they have released tickets for the Saturday now.

My slot is for 10:30am so it gives me plenty of time to get from Newark to World Trade Centre site. I would like to do a bit of souvenir shopping...I hear 5th Avenue is full of shops and Macy's? Where abouts are these in relation to the info you typed above? Also, I wouldn't mind visiting Central Park for an hour or so I can say I've been there.

    Thanks.

Ok. 5th Avenue is full of shops, but these are the expensive shops where you'll look at clothes, and that's about it. If you want cheap I heart NY souvenirs, then you should be OK with Times Square. When you're at Rockefeller Center, you are on 5th Avenue.

I'm going to ask this. Have you looked at a map?

So, Lets edit the journey now a bit, especially with a late ticket for the WTC Memorial.
Get into Manhattan from Newark, and walk down through to Battery Park, and head on the Staten Island Ferry, and you'll see the Statue of Liberty. Head off the ferry, straight back on, and you're in Manhattan. This takes an hour, so if you started at around 8am in Newark, it'll be around at around 10am now.

As you're off the Ferry, head towards the WTC, and pay your respects. This isn't a tourist attraction but a memorial. (11.15am finish)

Walk from the WTC down towards, Wall Street, head up and see the Charging Bull. Wander up an see the Brooklyn Bridge (12:15pm)

(Maybe grab an early lunch down here. If you're at the Brooklyn Bridge, you can easily walk a few blocks over to Chambers / West Broadway, and head to Mudville 9 for a good beer and the BEST chicken wings in NYC.)

Hop on the 6 Train on the subway, and get off at 76th street, and head into Central Park. Once you've walked down, you can easily walk down 5th Avenue, and up to the TOTR. (2pm)

Once you've done that, you can walk down and through to Times Square. As you walk towards it you'll pass a number of souvenir shops so pick up them cheap t-shirts and key rings. You can spend about half an hour here taking photos, and getting in the way of other tourists.

Once you're finished here, hop on the Subway down to Herald Square, and then you're at Macy's. It's around 3pm now, and also you should be able to head to the 33rd Street PATH or get NJ Transit from Penn Station and head back into Newark.

Hi I've been looking back through his thread and wonder if people could give me some advice. I'm planning a trip to new York for myself, husband and 6 year old daughter to celebrate husbands 50th which is new years day! Nothing booked yet, been checking out packages, flights, hotels. We hav some flexablity, obviously want to be there for NYE and NYD staying 5 nights so leaving between 28-30th. Major issue is NYE, do I need to contact hotels direct to see what if anything is on? Will doing something NYE cost us a fortune? Having a young child (who is very adaptable and loves parties and staying up late!) means a hotel based evenin would probably suit us best. BA & virgin are both doing a deal with Roosevelt hotel which has a rooftop bar, would this be open as would provide good views of fireworks etc Any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

I've not known hotels to put on events for NYE's. The main events are standing in Times Square, or heading to bars / clubs / restaurants.

Your problems that need solving are as follows. Finding a hotel that can sleep three. Have you thought about a budget yet? This might be the deciding factor.

Secondly, finding a restaurant that will allow a 6 year old (Yes, I know she's always good as gold, but not everyone will think that), on NYEs is another of the problems.

Even if the Roosevelt Hotel bar is open, as it is a bar, your 6 year old won't be allowed in. The rules for bars are strict in NYC. Please do some more research, because I don't think this is a great idea at all.

Thanks for replying so quickly, I did mean to emphasise that I needed somewhere child/family friendly as I know there is nothing worse than having an adult night out spent with other peoples kids!!! My husband is Italian and has been to NY twice before and really wants to go back there for his big birthday. My major issue has been what if anything we can do in the evenings with a child. I will continue to look into it and hopefully can find something that accomodates. I have had quotes from Le Parker Meridien hotel for a room to sleep 3 for £1700 and BA do flights for £1800 which seems to be the average cost for when we want to go. Finding something appropriate to do on NYE anywhere with kids is hard but when your birthday is New Years day you have to try! Thanks again for your honesty
