Hi I have flown with both. What class are you looking at booking?

I like Ba for economy. Virgin for premium economy. Ba for club.

    What time are the flights?

Hi sorry for the delay in replying
Were going economy, cant quite stretch to anything else. The flights are all about 8 in the morning so by time we arrive we get some time on the first day to get out and about.

    Hi

Hoping someone can give m e a bit of advice, were hoping to book out 4th trip to NY for the beginning of December (starting the Christmas shopping). Found flights that I like the look of coming up for £470 each, From Heathrow to JFK. Anyway my question is the flights i've been looking at are for BA and Virgin, Is one any better that the other? there's only a couple of quid between then and the times are both similar.

We've previously travelled with Continental and Delta (twice), both flights have been fine, to be honest were not particularly fussy, Cheers.
BA are a lot more generous with their hand baggage allowance: 23kg versus Virgin's 6kg. If your Christmas shopping includes anything fragile that you wouldn't want to check into the hold that would make a big difference.

Single ride Metrocard was $2.50 when we were there a fortnight ago. Great value.

No need to buy a single ride, they're more expensive.

Get a metrocard (zero cost), and all rides are $2.25. Add on $10, and you get 7% free. Just a bit of planning, and you'll save plenty. $29 buys you a week card, with unlimited rides (break even point is 13 rides on a metrocard, or 12 if you bought single trip cards.

Me thinks that 4 hours might be a bit of an exaggeration on public transport, unless there was a serious problem with the weather. With 4 trains every hour from Newark Airport Station, I don't know why you were waiting an hour, and a journey only takes 30 mins at the most. Even if you did wait an hour, and a 20 minute taxi ride at the end, that's not 4 hours... :/

We only used the subway 3 times, and two of those were spur of the moment decisions, so there was no benefit to us buying a week card.

I couldn't tell you the exact breakdown, but we landed slightly earlier than scheduled at 1pm and arrived at the hotel at 5pm -that was 4 hours when I was taught to tell the time.
Immigration was quite quick but we waited ages for luggage and then there was a mssive queue, that stretched halfway down the baggage hall, round the corner and halfway back again, to pass through customs.
My NJ Transit receipt is timed at 14.37 and there was a train standing at the platform as we went down the stairs, although they had closed the doors and it was about to pull away. I've no idea why the wait for the next train was so long as there was no announcement, I don't know the exact time the next train finally arrived but it was after 15.45 as I checked my watch shortly before it arrived. We seemed to be stopped in a couple of the stations quite a long time - the guards were muttering and moaning about the delays.
We had a short wait for a taxi rank outside Penn Station.
Hotel check-in time was 17.03, according to my receipt.

I'm sure this isn't 'normal' and accept that we were probably just unlucky.

  • Hi!
I'm looking to go to New York with my wife on 27th November and coming back on 2nd December and flying from Manchester. I think we've got the flights sorted I'm now trying to sort out accomodation.

I guess we'd be looking to stay Midtown / Times Square. The Holiday Inn chain group hotels look reasonable value - but is there any others I ought to be looking at?

Given M4RKMs comments above should I leave booking the hotel for a couple of months and then see what offers are available then?

For those dates is priceline an option?

    Thanks

Mark (or anyone else for that matter) can you recommend anywhere near the cosmopolitan that does breakfast at a reasonable price?

We're ideally after somewhere that does healthier breakfast options such as cereal / muesli etc. I've stayed at that hotel a few times and generally gone to the diner by Ground Zero but found it a bit pricey there and limited healthier options.

I don't mind the egg /potato choices but it gets a bit OTT when I'm having it every day!

Ideally looking at paying no more than around $7 dollars for a cereal, maybe a couple of slices of toast and orange juice.

    Thanks

It's a while since we were there, and I'm not sure what you think is 'reasonable', but there was one in the same block which did muesli to die for, and various less healthy options, but enough to keep all of us (ie including teenage boys) full enough not to need lunch!

That sounds great. Do you know roughly where abouts it's located? I can't remember seeing anywhere around that area on previous visits that's all.

    Thanks!

The one we went to was next door and called the Soda shop it looks at though its now closed.
Great musli, poached eggs on toast etc

There is a Deli right opposite by Reade St that did great breakfasts that you can take back to your room.
We regularly were joined by the local police getting theirs.

Have you tried the amish market that is just down the road (towards the trade center (not ground zero, that's been and gone)) ?

Other than that I can't think of anything. I normally grab a 2 egg roll from the deli across the road.
