    Hi!
I'm looking to go to New York with my wife on 27th November and coming back on 2nd December and flying from Manchester. I think we've got the flights sorted I'm now trying to sort out accomodation.

I guess we'd be looking to stay Midtown / Times Square. The Holiday Inn chain group hotels look reasonable value - but is there any others I ought to be looking at?

Given M4RKMs comments above should I leave booking the hotel for a couple of months and then see what offers are available then?

For those dates is priceline an option?

    Thanks

    Kevin

Those dates will be one of the most expensive times of year to visit NYC. I would be looking right now for hotels, as you may be surprised. My advice above applied for rooms in February, which is low season, and advice is totally different for the weeks before christmas.

Hi sorry for the delay in replying
Were going economy, cant quite stretch to anything else. The flights are all about 8 in the morning so by time we arrive we get some time on the first day to get out and about.

    Hi again

Also forgot to mention you have to pay to reserve seats on Ba (25GBP) or wait for online check - in.

With Virgin booking is free (or wait for online check-in), but they don't release all seats in advance but there are still options usually to book.

It does help not having to pay extra to get seated together in a location you prefer.

If you can book with the airline directly that way you might get some good upgrade prices online too :)

The vagueness is the problem here.

There are many piers in Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc, because the city is surrounded by water. If you think it'll cost about $18, plus 20% tip, (if it is Brooklyn Bridge). If it is the cruise terminal, then that's about $21, plus 20% tip, plus tolls if any.

Bear in mind also, that it'll only cost $2.25 if you go by subway. Much cheaper, and will take the same amount of time.

Are you sure you want to be in Times Square? Are you heading to a hotel nearby, some that say "Times Square" may be up to a mile away from Times Square itself.

Sorry for the late reply....laptop problems !!! Anyway..yes I'm meaning the cruise terminal....I am staying at Staybridge Suites W40th St...

Subway price looks tempting....the luggage is the problem....how easy it to board the subway with 4 large suitcases ? ...done it in London once...never again !

Single ride Metrocard was $2.50 when we were there a fortnight ago. Great value.

Took us a nightmare 4 hours to get to our hotel (next to Grand Central) by train from landing at Newark, even though immigration was quite quick. We waited almost an hour at Newark station, having just missed one train by seconds to get to Penn Station, then taxi to hotel.

If we'd known how long the wait for the next train was going to be (in 32 degree heat) we'd have given up waiting and got a taxi, however we'd already bought the tickets, there was no announcement of how long the wait for the next train would be and there was no-one taround to ask - we didn't want to leave the platform and go and find someone in case a train came while we were away from the platform.

We got a coach/bus back from right opposite the hotel, $16 per adult, $10 chidren.

Hi... Was the coach from the Port Authority station ? We are thinking of doing this when we are flying back from Newark.

We got on just around the corner from Grand Central but it did stop at the Port Authority and others boarded there.
Someone then boarded the bus to collect the fares and from there it was straight to EWR.
    I think there's a bus about every 20 mins.

There are different, but identical looking, buses that go to each of the airports - just check with the driver that it's the right bus before he loads your luggage under the bus!

    Hello,

    This is a great thread.

We are going to NY for the first time in January for part of our honeymoon :j We are going from Tuesday - Sunday evening, so thinking of what to see and do at the mo. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks x
  • The Metrocard was a good buy, it cost us $29 each for a 7 day card, and covered one journey from JFK to our hotel with the Air train uplift of $5, you can use it on buses too.

Pick up any booklets/brochures that are in your hotel reception as they always have money off coupons in them. We planned to visit Intrepid and one had a coupon for that, when we then visited Intrepid the ticket gave money off the Circle Line cruise we wanted to do.

We also found a bus map in the back of one of the booklets which was ace as we used the buses more than the subway.
