    Cheers Greenface.

The simple thing is, is the commute worth it. I've stayed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and if you're going for a shopping trip around Midtown, then it doesn't make much sense, but Long Island City would, but a Midtown hotel would work best.

I've done a trip through to New Jersey, and find the Path slower, and less frequent which makes it more of an awkward place to base a holiday from, and it's not something I'd think about doing myself.

    Hi All,

I recently won a trip to New York and am so excited, as its somewhere I have always wanted to visit but would never have been able to afford. There are certain things I know I want to do Empire State building/Top of the rock, 9/11 memorial, walk across brooklyn bridge, shopping and visit central park. Are there any other "Must do's"? As part of the package, I am staying at The Muse hotel near central park and have a night out planned for New Yorks fashion week. I am there four nights and want to see as much as possible, but am on a tight budget so any advice is recommended! Thanks!

Staten Island Ferry, it's free, you get a good view of the Statue of Liberty. Stay at the back as all the crowds will be at the front and snap away. Do it twice, once by day and once at night.

What do you like? I'd recommend a brewery tour (free) at Brooklyn Brewery. Williamsburg, Brooklyn is also great for cheaper eats, and a good night out.

Maybe you want to have a free guided tour of an area of NYC, so request a Big Apple Greeter (do it now, you may or may not get one!!)

Head down to Greenwich Village and just wander around the streets, and into Soho for shopping.

    Hi,

Me and my OH are looking at travelling to NYC for 7 nights on 3rd February (coming back on 10th) We are pretty flexible on dates, as long as the trip encompasses the 5th.

I've currently found flights for £409 return. Can anyone find cheaper then this?

Also, I've been recommended to look at airbnb.com has anyone used it (we don't mind apartments), been recommended DUMBO, Williamsburg or Greenpoint. Anywhere else that isn't Times Square.

We'd like a mixture of the generic tourist trail, NYC culture, and a little off-beat stuff.

    Cheers, Sneasel

    Ps. First Post :j

Edit: would you book now, or wait a little longer, say November/December?

1 - Flights are a good price, but are the flight times good? is it direct?

2 - Apartment rentals are illegal, including those whole apartment rentals on airbnb. The "Private Room" rentals are legal, but could be against the rules of the tenancy agreement. So many grey areas, but full apartments are illegal most of the time, regardless what website they are on. Look at a decent hotel...

I don't suppose anybody knows of any bars in the woodside / jackson heights area of Queens that open early (10am) for 3pm english premier league games?

    Mark,

First of all, thanks for the reply :)

I cant remember the flight times :') haha, but they were from the STA travel website (im under 26, so they say that you get a discount!)

However, I have been searching around on the website and have the following

    "The Quote itself: £1343

Who the quote is from: Expedia

The departure Airport/Post: Birmingham Intl (BHX)

The Holiday Dates: Monday 4th February - Monday 11th February

The number of people travelling (inc kids ages): 2 Adults (Under 26)

The Hotel (or * if it’s allocate on arrival): Condor Hotel, Brooklyn

The Board (self catering/half board etc): Bed and Breakfast

    Any specific requirements:

Is an in-flight meal included: N/A (But I guess so)

We are flexible on dates, as long as we are in New York for the 5th February (No departing or leaving this day)"

(X-post from beat that quote thread)

The only downside to this, is that the flights go

Birmingham > Amsterdam > JFK and also it starts on a Monday.

What do you think of that though? :j

    Thanks again,

    Sneasel

I"m going to cut to the chase, and ask the question if you are an Orthodox Jew, or not.

If you are, awesome. If not, you need to be made aware what the Condor Hotel in Brooklyn actually is, so no tvs, on the sabbath the lift stops at every floor regardless.

It also isn't in the greatest area. I've stayed in Williamsburg quite a few times, and never ventured south of Marcy Ave, as there isn't much there for tourists. It is just over half a mile to the nearest subway station, however, it is G train, so reasonably useless, so you're looking a mile to get to Marcy Ave, (J/M/Z) which gets you into lower lower manhattan.

Personally, if you want to stay in Williamsburg, and at your age, (if you're over 21 obviously), you will do, cos its EPIC, bars, restaurants, brewery, bowling, beer, beer, late nights etc. Then look at the Hotel Le Jolie. Much better area, great bars nearby too...

Don't worry about cutting to the chase, but no, I am not an Orthodox Jew, so thanks you for the info.

And I am over 21, but the OH isnt, Williamsburg was recommended too me by a friend. Want to stay in Brooklyn cause it's a little further out, we've got 7 days, so travelling into Manhatten doesnt bother us that much. I'll check out your recomendation :) we're just trying to keep the cost down too.
