And they may actually provide old-fashioned customer service, unlike the overpaid, surly lot that currently pose as cabin crew.0 -

Hi all. I'll be arriving at 11.10pm and staying at a hotel in Queens. I haven;t decided yet whether to taxi a taxi or the subway.
If I take a taxi, is it better to pre book and with who? None of the shared shuttle services go to Queens

Roses, Not sure about the airport as I prosume that not all the taxis outside airport would be expecting to to into city however maybe someone else can advise on this?
You could always get the airtrain to Queens-Jamaica station? then ring for a taxis from there or maybe they are outside? Worth looking into to save some $$$.New York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.

Can I get public transport from La Guardia to 23rd Street Manhattan? Is it appropriate with a small case and a back pack?
Also, what is the best metrocard to get for 7 days?0 -
Dear All,
I've just booked a flight to New York yesterday eve as a birthday suprise for my girl friends 25th birthday. Now all I need is your help in deciding where to stay. I have had a look on some of the threads on MSE but am finding it difficult to choose which area to stay in. I had thought about staying in Time Sq, but reviews seem to suggest that hotels are small, not great value for money and that there aren't many good restaurants around there.
I am looking to stay in an area with good bars and restaurants if that is any help!?
Any help in making it a fab bday would be very helpful.
Many thank

I'd check out Trip Advisor if I were you. Open up a map of NYC in google and then check out the various areas and the hotels around where you want to stay. See also Restaurant Row or Menupages for decent reviews and recommendations.
A lot of 1st time visitors stay in or around Times Square but there are plenty of other options.

I've never done it, but apparently there is a Airport Express Bus service from LGA. The other option is a taxi which shouldn't be too expensive from there.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

Personally if i was to arrive anywhere at that time of night I would get a cab, a matter of semantics but you cant pre-book cabs you hail cabs and pre-bok car services, for car services have a look at carmellimo.com.Can I get public transport from La Guardia to 23rd Street Manhattan? There is a bus service which runs from LGA to penn station or grand central, however it costs about $15 per person so it may be more economical to get a cab from the airport.
You say you're going to 23rd street but 23rd street is approx 2miles long, you need to get in the habit saying your ave and cross street, never assume anyone, especially cabbies, will know the location of hotels etc.
Best metrocard is the 7 day unlimited card which will set ya back $27

As mentioned tripadvisor is good for this kinda help best thing to do is work out how much you can afford and see what your money will get you and then read the reviews, despite certain peoples opinion there is nowt wrong with times square and the surrounding areas for me the most important factor is closeness to the subwayLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
Having just returned from a week staying at the Doubletree in Times Sq. I have to back up the 'nothing wrong with Times Square' point of view

Close to main subway intersections, so nowhere is particularly difficult to travel too. Loads of places to eat (ok, so they're not all going to win awards for inventive food, but most do a damn good steak!), lots of stuff to see, lots of pubs and bars too.
I went for a week, and had a brilliant time, it's amazing how quickly you adapt to referring to everything as '43rd and 7th' or '23rd and broadway'.
Re Metrocards, get the 7 day unlimited, well worth the cost, especially if like me you get on the wrong train a few times in a row. Also, bear in mind there are some station works going on at the weekends there at the moment, so not all the routes are running on Sat / Sun (the elusive B train - which i spent 30 minutes or so waiting for before realising it wasnt coming, springs to mind).
Regarding an 'itinerary' I'd suggest making a list of the things you want to see, grouped by location and then just attacking an 'area' a day and seeing how you get on
Bus tours on the first couple of days are a great idea, you get a good overview of the city. Well worth it.0
