Thanks Mark...
When would you say is the cheapest time to travel?
Between January and March. August is also a cheaper time, however, this year, prices are staying slightly higher thanks to the Police & Fire Department Olympics.
I'm in final year of uni starting end september, so I was looking at start of September so I could get away before my hectic year begins (will be working flexi time with my company while doing final year)...
I'd try push it a week earlier, and go last week of August. There are decent hotels that are doing secret deals at below $150 a night, which is cheap for NYC.
My mum will not stay in anywhere except a hotel (snob lol)....but If I went with my friend I would look at other places like you said... where do you find these?
My mum is exactly the same. Anyway, where? Airbnb.com - when you've done your search, you need to ensure you're only searching for "Private Room", as renting a full apartment for less than 30 days, is still illegal in NYC. A private room in someones apartment, however isn't.
Hope that helps

Hi,
I am looking at going to NY late August and other than the hotel prices being high, I am looking at an apartment type hotel as it will be myself and the 2 kids, and do not want to go through the same thing like when we went to florida and lived on take aways for 2 weeks (although the kids would love this)
Any suggestions please??
thanks0 -
All depends on budget, but Affinia Manhattan/Dumont have two bed apartments, as does Embassy suites.
Doubletree Times Square also has some, but the cost of these is quite expensive.0 -
Anyone any feedback on Delta Airlines - they have the dates and times that I want to fly for about £570pp at the end of Jul. The reviews I have read of Delta aren't very complimentary and was wondering if anyone else had any experience of flying with them?
BA - Thurs to Mon (the days I'm going) at the end of this week are £100 cheaper. Do I hold my nerve and wait til nearer the end of Jul to book and possibly get a better airline?
Thanks in advance0 -

I've flown delta quite a few times from both MAN and LHR. I have no complaints about them at all, always on time, and planes are clean and comfortable. The problem with reviews, is that a lot of them are regarding the internal services throughout the USA, rather than the Transatlantic Services, which are on par with every other airline. They offer more legroom (by 1") than BA, and also have direct flights from other airports other than just Heathrow.
I would have flown them this time in September, however, AA worked out a few quid cheaper.

You're looking at $180 per night max before taxes, which for a hotel room is tight, without exact dates it is hard to tell you exactly what you can get.
I'm assuming also that the kids are ok to share a bed.
New York City is not like Orlando, and you can get great meals in restaurants, great meals from a deli, for very little money, and not rely on take aways all the time, so however nice the Kitchen might be, I just don't think you'll get anything within your budget.
Onto the facts. I've put in some random dates for 4 nights at the end of August into Quikbook and found the following. Please research these places yourself too, as I'm just going on names I know of.
Beekman Tower - 1 bedroom studio - $215 a night
Cosmopolitan Hotel - 2 double beds - $225 a night
Country Inn & Suites - Long Island City - Studio - $170 per night (direct through hotel website)
The beekman is the only one that offers a kitchenette. i've looked at all the usual culprits for apartment hotels, and they are more expensive than what you want to pay.

I personally do not like city passes etc. They're expensive for what they offer, you don't jump many queues at all, mainly just the ones for buying a ticket, which are normally short anyway, and you can get discounts / combos, and or just pay what you wish at certain attractions.
Also, what they encourage is attraction chasing, rather than letting you have some time to enjoy New York City itself.
The best thing to do is sit down and price everything up you want to see, and then work out if it is a useful purchase - I did just that, and was slightly creative at times - http://m4rk.in/isq0eH - I saved money over the pass by doing what I did, but also, I would have got a timed ticket for the statue of liberty, rather than a voucher, plus a 4 hour wait to get on a ferry. Knowing things like that, are priceless, and will make a better holiday rather than chasing after attractions, in my opinion.
