I'm prepared for the cold (I hope!). Is it a lot more colder than the North of England? I'm also expecting snow!
Yes, much colder. Temperatures of -20C aren't unusual. There can also be big snowstorms which can dump 2 or 3 feet of snow overnight. The good thing is that they are much better at coping with the weather than we are. The streets are cleared within hours and airports may be closed for a few hours but you don't get the total shutdowns like we get here.0 -
I kinda disagree with doshwaster. -20C is a freak temperature in New York City, much as it is in the UK, and not something that is a regular occurance. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, with record lows of -20c being recorded in 1942.

You can see the average temperatures here and while cold, it's the wind that goes up and down the avenues and streets that can seem bitterly cold, but bearable. NYC is not a centre of snow either, and the huge snowstorms last year, again, we just something odd, and not a regular occurrence.
If you take into account that May is the wettest month, but also one of the nicest months to visit, I really don't think you've got that much to worry about. The key to NYC in the winter is layers layers layers. Everywhere is heated so once you walk inside somewhere, you'll want to take one or 2 layers off.0 -

Thanks! I was slightly worried at -20'C and I remember the images on the news with the huge amounts of snow in New York. Glad they handle it better than they do here though!
I just looked at the link and I'm amazed the record 'highs' for December. 17-24'C!! That's how hot is has been round here recently, unbelieveable.0 -

I travel to NYC regularly in March. I've had temperatures of up to 20c, and other years had temps of 0c, it's just one of them places (much like the UK) that can be unpredictable.0 -

It was pretty strange when I went end of September/start of October last year. Arrival day was hot and humid, I remember feeling extremely stuffy in the subway stations desparate to get on those air-con trains! Then 2 days later went to statue of liberty, freezing cold, heavy rain and generally a miserable day. The day after went to Central Park in glorious sunshine. So yes, quite similar to the UK in many respects :rotfl:0 -
I was in NYC for one of its coldest weathers in recent times (feb 2007)It took 2 hrs to thaw the aircraft luggage doors . Once in the city you can bask in beautiful hot sunshine then go around the corner and freeze your nuts off in the wind chill cold shadows. I used to do the deli run in the morning and freeeeeze. It was average -7 on the ground and -18 at the top of the rock. Me and a bloke that lived about 6 miles from me where the only ones stupid enough to brave the full outside deck. (but he had a vest on) whimp:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Morning all
Weather December 2008 (26th onwards) Very mild in the mid 50's for 3 days people in shorts and t-shirts lol then got colder closer to new years eve with some snow and apparently one of the coldest NYE they had had for a while.
Weather April 2011 (15th onwards) windy due to mixed weather in the US - A gloriously hot day and the others average with light showers for 1 day.
I hope to go in June/July next time to see what that is like
I was also planning to go in October, but i'd like to pick a season where I can leave the hat and scarf at home lol0 -
Hi folks, I have a couple of questions. I want to fly from Manchester and some flights go to Newark only. It seems the farthest away from Manhatton, but should this put me off? There will be 3 adults and we will probably get a cab. Also, I've taken into consideration the reports about the Beacon Hotel and I think we'd like to stay there. we want to go next april/ May but the hotel site itself is not very user friendly ( have to give too many details just to enquire availability) and other booking sites are not helpful with this particular hotel but keep giving me alternatives ( Virgin will only give me alternatives in Las Vegas- dont know whats going on there). So, whats the best way to book the Beacon.:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Why are some of todays sale prices on expedia and hotels.com more expensive than yesterdays non sale prices?
example Grand Union hotel 20/8/11 to 25/8/11 yesterday £500, today £533?0 -

if you're looking for April / May 2012, the hotel itself might not have released it's availability. You'll be better off waiting til around September and looking then, though even then it will probably be just rack rate, rather than a discount rate.
If you're staying in Manhattan, then either JFK or Newark are OK for a flight, however, I prefer JFK myself, as it is cheaper to get to / from the airport, especially with public transport. If you're going to get a cab, Newark really works out expensive, as you have to pay the tolls back to the airport for the New Jersey taxi driver, as they are not allowed to pick up fares.
The easiest thing to do, is book a car service, from the likes of carmel or dial7, and they are a fixed cost, plus toll and tip. The tolls into Manhattan are more from Newark than they are JFK, but only by a few dollars.
From MAN you have Continental that flys into Newark, and Delta or American Airlines that fly into JFK, there isn't much normally between the costs, I find DL or AA cheaper than CO (who will eventually be rebranded as United!), best site to use is kayak. Best time to book for April next year? After September this year. I normally book in December for a March trip.
