Thank you! I will buy this later today. I will need to call New York Water Taxi first, to ask at what age a child needs a ticket.
Good news - threes and under are free of charge, fours to twelve need a child ticket.
My son is three. I was expecting to have to pay but, woohoo!
Thanks again to angandjim for posting the Groupon!0 -
Hi,
I have just spent five hours reading these helpful posts and my brain is going round in circles!
I am looking to go to NY either the first or second week of October for 4 nights to celebrate a 40th birthday it will just be myself and my sister.
I have been to NY 9 years ago but did'nt plan it well so we spent a lot of time walking round in circles,so this time I am going to plan a bit better.
I would just like to know is it a good idea to book now or wait and book early summertime?
We would like to fly from Birmingham or Manchester,I just would like a little push in the right direction!
Many Thanks

If you want to fly from Birmingham have a look at air lingus - this is one airline I'd book earlier rather than later as they do the flights starting from £100-ish (so check what's available on the weeks you're interested in to get the cheapest flights) so with taxes etc you could pay from £250 each for return flights (plus you get the bonus of clearing immigration in Ireland en route :j).0 -

Depends on price, and dates. The vague description of the first or second week in October, doesn't help. Prices vary by day, and hotel prices vary by day. First thing is to decide which days you want to go, and tweak it accordingly.
For a short trip, I wouldn't consider changing planes, so Manchester gives you more option with 2 airlines flying to JFK, and 1 to EWR, and again, it depends on where you're staying in NYC to which airport is more convenient.

Look, It's easy when you're really specific, as you're fluffy and non descript, it is difficult to help.
Give me the following information, and I can point you in the right direction.
1 - Exact Dates
2 - Budget for the ROOM - (not per person)
3 - Bed Requirements - (Are you willing to share a bed?)
3 beds is difficult. 2 beds and a sofa bed will be easier. 2 rooms will be easier too, but then budget comes into it.
£500 each is £150 a night so that works out to be $208 per night before tax and is doable, but I don't want to spend time searching around until I'm 100% sure of what you want.

Hey. Right sorry about being vague haha.
Exact Dates: 20th-30th June.
Budget for the room would be about £500 each. Could pay more if we need to etc.
Bed Requirements. We all want separate beds. A Sofa bed is no problem. I don't mind where i sleep as long as its clean ha. As long as we have different beds. Booking two rooms is not a problem either but as you say it's the extra expense. Size of the rooms makes no difference as we won't be spending much time in the rooms. It'll be just to sleep and get ready etc.
There was 4 of us going up until the last minute when one dropped his !!!!. Leaving it quite awkward for rooms etc.
As for location of hotels. We would rather be in Manhattan if possible but i myself don't mind being in Queens or somewhere similar. A 20 minute tube/bus/taxi ride is fine by me.
I've seen The Jane hotel. I'd be happy with that but obviously it pays to keep looking until we come to book.
Thanks for the help

imagine me doing this now *sucks air through teeth*
I'm going to explain everything, so you should be able to find the same deals.
OK, First things first. Translate hotel into US. £1500 is $2400 inc tax, though as prices are displayed ex tax, take off 15%, which leaves us with $2086, or $208 per night. That is a tight budget to get a room with 3 beds.
I've had a look at Queens, but there isn't much there that is cheaper than this deal. Now, there is a new hotel opening in Brooklyn. About 17 minutes away from Manhattan, but it is a brand new Aloft Hotel. Coming up at your dates the following.
1 king room + 1 queen room $215 per night before tax. So, it's 2 rooms, one with 2 beds, and 1 with 1 bed. Now, as you're doing the hard work to sort it all out, you get the king room. If you're good mates, you should just split the cost down the middle, and blame your friend not turning up. Yes, one person gets a room to themselves, and it is cheaper. Again it is nonrefundable. Each room costs $1,268.67 so $2537.34 or £1585.83 / £528.63 per person or £52.86 per person per night!
I found Eastgate Tower, Junior Suite, which is 2 beds, plus sofa, and full kitchen. (Think fridge, and beers!) It is USD 2,682.75 in total for the room, (that includes tax) which is then working out to be £55.89p per person per night. It's in Manhattan, it's a short walk to the subway, you can easily head to areas of the city for nightlife (yes, get into Williamsburg, it's awesome!).
Now, to find this rate, click here first - http://m4rk.in/eyQBUA doesn't matter if you leave that discount code in or not, what does matter is that you drop down the list, and select the Eastgate Tower hotel. If you don't drop down, the prices are higher for some reason.
I can't find anything else. You're not left with a lot of choice. Both credible options need a bigger budget, not by much, but it's doable.
Hope that helps some way, you've just gotta make the choice if you want to be 20 minutes away from Manahttan in a modern hotel, or in Manhattan (though you're still going to have to use the subway), in a room and someone sleeping on a sofa bed. I'm sure that budget can be stretched by what is £60 each. Just be wary that it is a prepaid rate, and get the money off your mates before you book it.
Hope that helps.

That's brilliant. Thanks. I'm checking those out now. I see what you mean with budget. When we checked travel agents at the start of the year we got quoted some deals with flights & hotels in at around £900-1000. That was pay upfront. I wish we'd gone with those now.
One of my mates is actively seeking hotels alongside me. The other isn't but it's best he doesn't. He'd end up booking us in Austrailian hotels.
Thanks for your help again. I'll let you know how i get on!0 -
M4RKM, I'm just trying to trawl through this thread to find your pub crawl post. I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction? I'm going to convince the OH that if I spend a day shopping, we sould spend a day drinking!
**EDIT**
Found it! It's here if anyone else wants it!
Also, would it be worth including a link in the first post? ([strike]Having not seen it, I don't know yet![/strike] **EDIT** Having read it, it's most definitely worth linking in the first post!).
Did you ever write the Manhattan one?

A pub crawl? on the front page... aaah go on then.
Nope. never really got to write a pub crawl around Manhattan. it's so vast, I'd rather contrate on an area. I think I could do a decent crawl if I said it would start at say 14th Street / Union Square. Yeah. I'll get penning that now....
