£50 a night? In a word. No.
Hotels in NYC are upwards of $150 a night, for a room with a double bed in. If you're seriously looking at a hotel room for 3 people for £50 a night, you really should have looked for your hotel, before you booked flights. You might have to look at places like Long Island City, to get a room around the $100 mark, £50 = $80 inc tax, so that's $70 before tax.
The cheapest you can normally get is $99 for a single bed, in a hotel called The Jane. That is for 1 person.
If you've found cheaper hotels, I'd urge you to post them on here, or tripadvisor, so you'll get help and know if they actually exist, are convenient for travellers (don't stay near the airport, seriously!)

YOU CAN SLEEP IN THE PARK IN JUNE its warm enough otherwise unless its £50 each your rammed, have to tried to look ? hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -
Any areas you were hoping to stay in or to avoid?
I think we need to find out exactly what the budget it. When people say they have £50 a hotel room, I take it literally, if it were £50 each, I'd think people would say each (even though rooms are priced per room, not per person).
It's such a bizarrely low figure, which scares me a bit, because people who have such a small budget are sometimes the ones that can bit hit with scams, and end up without anywhere to stay.0 -
I was thinking maybe he meant £50 each, though am guessing he'd still be struggling? Or maybe he means £500 and just missed the zero0

Oh, and Mark, thank you ever so much for all your help (here and on MSE, t'is I, Angucky) I obviously can't buy you a drink, but I did drop some money into a Cruelty to Children tin today and decided that was on your behalf (I didn't clarify, but am assuming they were against the cruelty, rather than pro)0

My karma now feels much better.... against or pro it doesn't matter really, it's the thought that counts...
(and yes, I find my comment highly amusing!)

I saw that there are some stores that you can get a 'foreigner' discount in such as Maceys and Bloomingdales. Does anyone know if any electrical/computer stores do this too... ones that might sell Ipads for example?
thanks0 -

Nope. Most discount vouchers I've seen (like J&R) always have a term that removes Apple Products from the discount. Also, because it's an expensive item, make sure you don't go over your £390 you're allowed to bring back, otherwise you'll be liable for 20% VAT on the item (no duty on an iPad, but VAT is due), which more often than not, makes it the same price as in the UK.

Also, despite being located in macys, j&r is'nt part of macys and therefore the discount card wouldnt work anywayLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0

J&R isn't really just located in Macy's. That's just a tiny concession. J&R is on Park Row. they have separate shops along the whole of Park Row, just near the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. It's HUGE.
