any idea what bus tour ? did you book it there or before you went ......
think we used the Gray Line bus tours. It was a bit pricy - cant remember exactly how much but I remember thinking it was not particularly cheap (think around $50 each for 48 hours). However, still thought it was well worth it. We bought the tickets there. Just went to one of the bus stops which are marked and are everywhere and paid our money (you can pay by credit card).
Another good bit was that the tour guides on the bus are usually excellent giving out really interesting information as you go past places. A couple we had were very amusing.0 -
Hi myself and two friends are going to New York for 6 days, flying out 25th March Heathrow to Newark.
We're staying at the Travel Inn hotel on 515 West & 42nd Street.
Can anyone advise on the best i.e. cheapest way to get from the airport to the hotel we arrive at Newark at 4PM if that's any use.
I'd also be grateful of any advice from anyone who may have stayed at this hotel before.
Cheers in advancedPenny-Pincher0 -

Cheapest is'nt always the best option, my attitude is time spent sitting on buses can be time wandering around manhattan.
Your main options are:
2 buses which end up at port authority and then walking 2 blocks to your hotel, your looking at $12 each so $36 in total
or get a cab which will take you direct to your door and will be quicker, and no faffing about changing buses etc given your location the taxi from newark is $55 + tolls and tips so say $70'ish.
Personaly I know which option I would prefer.
Also you mention your hotel and the location, however you need to get into the habit of saying the cross ave too, your hotel is actually 515 42nd and 10th ave, if you use cabs etc they will have no idea about building numbers, hell half of them hardly know the big sights, so always remember to tell people your cross street.
Some mixed reviews on tripadvisor for the hotel:

however if you are doing NYC properly you probably wont see much of your hotel anyway it will be just used for storage and sleepingLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -

my 5th trip is coming up, with an added wedding this time
3rd June - leave Heathrow 8pm and arrive JFK 1035pm
4th & 5th not sure yet
6th the day of the wedding gotta get a train out to Greenvale at 12pm but I'm getting the last train back to Penn station at 1045pm
7th not sure yet
8th - I have most of the day free and getting the 22.40 back to London
Not booked my hotel yet but I have a couple of choices. I stayed in The Jane last year which I loved but from varying reviews it seems to have a massive bedbug problem at the moment so I'm loath to go back...
I'm going to the MoMA as I love it there and the Met as there's an exhibition I want to go to about Women and Fashion. The 99c stores are a must for me and I want to try and find some more vintage shops...
I've been so many time it feels like a home away from home, it's my place to relax when I need a break from work

ThanksI think the cab will be the way to go, bus swapping isn't the first thing we want to be doing after a long flight lol. Thanks for the tip about directions, that's saved some confusion.
I'm not expecting much from the hotel because it was cheap, you get what you pay for, right? As my grandad always said 'expect the worse, then you can't be disappointed' As long as it's got a roof and a bed that I'm not sharing with a stranger, I'll be happy.Penny-Pincher0 -
From Newark, a cab is on the meter, it is not like JFK where it is a fixed fee. From what I know, a cab will be over $60 plus toll and tip.
According to dial7 it is $44 (plus toll and tip) and carmel $43 (plus carmel have a discount voucher of $3 from the Airport).
Unless you're choosing a larger car than a normal Full Size Sedan (which will comfortably sit 4 people, and get 3 full size luggage in the trunk.) there is no reason it is $60

Looked on the site there but didnt want to go as far as payment..... Also MarkIi thought you said previously you couldnt check in on line with Continental Airlines ????? Is this not it ? Dont shout now if I'm wrong, cant check it out as you can only check in online 24 hours before flight
