Thanks, I do like to plan but not everything. I am hoping this will not be our only visit to NY so am expecting a steep learning curve. Then the next time we can say for definite which restaurants or shows we'd like to see.

    Hi All,

We want to go to New York for 10 nights in september.

Any time between Sat 18th and Sat 2nd October

Flying from Bristol but will travel to London if needs be,

Don't want a fancy hotel, just somewhere in the midtown area

Any good prices around/tips for finding the best price?

    Thanks in advance

    Kay

kayak.co.uk for flights or expedia for packages, personally I always trawl about but always end up with expedia, and dont forget quidco if you use it.

10 nights is a lump of time in NY, personally I only ever go for 4 or 5 nights as i feel pooped after a few days in the city.

Probably best for you to trawl through some travel sites, like expedia, and then read the reviews on tripadvisor and make your own decision, unless you want mark to pop up and start going on about the cosmo, which im starting to think he has shares in!

Chinatown - maybe try Wo -hop ( anyone been ) ?

Also thinking of eating at Virgils

Yup been to wo hop on our last trip

    +'s

    Cheap as chips
    Huge Portions
Helpful waiters, you assume everything you have in the UK will be on the menu but they will help you out

    -'s

Get's busy expect to queue and because its tiny the tables dont move that quick
worlds worst tap water, which they give you with your meal

    Mmmmmmm virgils

This is our first night meal when we go to NY

    +'s

    Good food
Huuuuuuge portions, downside with this is the starters are massive and can easily ruin your main, you must try the train wreck fries they rock
    Reasonably priced considering location
    Attentive wait staff
    Massive cocktails

    -'s

    Can get very busy
Sometimes feels rushed, ie order your food and its there in minutes
They add the service charge to the bill, which can be a good thing but just make sure you dont double tip
Extrememly dark, never understood this but its nice to see your food

if virgils is busy and you really want to have a steak/burger/ribs in times square area I can also highly recommend dallas bbq, 42nd st between 7th and 8th Ave

But Mark you know how to get about....I have printed off a map from Harlem as south as Chinatown and upper west side and eastside....but its all double dutch to me....I though that was loads to do and see...i have read all the threads on the 2009 new york thread and most of the new 2010......
someone suggested a bus tour as soon as you arrive to familarize youself with new york.......thats why i suggested it.....
I will read yours mark....Think i need a cuppa and a choccie biccie first as im sure it will be fab.....New york just looks so big and spread out and FRIGHTENING........
mrak have printed off your must see and do map.
would maybe be better heading to a different area each night and seeing round the place and then having dinner
Mark TOTR was my number 1 to do and see , i just forgot to list it,

We did the bus tour and for us we found it incredibly useful and a good way of taking a look at areas we may otherwise have missed. We made notes of places we thought we would like to go back to and did just that. Without doing the bus tour we would have missed out possibly. They can be slow but its still a good way to see loads.

We also ate in Times Square one night and whilst it was not the best meal we had, we just wanted to do it so I say go for it if that's what you fancy.
  • Can anyone find the dates for the Radio City Spectaular this year? I am trying to find what date it starts.
New York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.
No place in the world that can compare ♥ 2nd October 2010 ♥

Stardust Diner, overpriced, poor food, it's aimed at tourists like yourself.
    M

Of course its touristy but, for a first timer in the city, its a bit of fun. All I can say is I had my birthday brunch there and they spoilt me rotten. When my server found out it was my birthday she got the whole restaurant to sing to me - poor people who'd just come in for a quiet bite!
Also if you're thinking of a show, its next door to the Mamma Mia theatre.

But if we're talking Broadway shows then the best is of course Lion King (book ASAP- you will not get tickets from TKTS) and then of course next door to the LK theatre is the best cheesecake in the city - JUNIOR'S!!!
Tip - make sure you all order a different flavour as the choice is huge and they are all so tempting.
  • Hey everyone!

Just like to say thanks for all the help! I'm now booked to fly out to NYC on 22 March, staying in Hotel Mela, then on to Chicago on 28 March, staying in the hilariously OTT Trump Tower. Thanks to help from users and this site, I got some great deals.

I'd love to catch some sport while I'm out there. Preferably ice hockey or basketball (don't think NFL is running right now). Any ideas where I might get a decent rate on a pair of tickets?

    Cheers!
