I have never actually flown to New York from the UK so i can't say how the long the flight from the UK is, but i have flown from NYC to the UK many many times, each time the flight takes around 5hrs 50. If you would call that a long flight then what would you call the 18 hour one i did direct from Singapore to Los Angeles?

I really wouldn't call a flight to Eastern USA long haul. By the time you get in the air, the tv has come on, have watched a film, had something to eat and read a paper you are looking at coming in to land.

I would call an 18 hour flight a long flight
I would call a 4 hour flight a short flight
and I would call the New York flight which I have done several times from the UK NOT a short flight which is what I said.

You are lucky - I have never had a direct flight from NY to the UK lasting less than 6 hours which is why I made the comment. My personal opinion is that PE is worth it.
  • Using Virgin Atlantic as an example, the PE product is good but not still worth the £500 difference in price over the cheapest economy fare for me.

I'd sooner use that to get a better hotel or to splash out on eating out...

I agree with this and could do more with £500 on the ground seems alot of money for a empty space.
Im a window fitter and i can price two ways
a/Door and two windows fitted in a day total cost £1,500.

b/door and two windows fitted £950 for goods and £550 for me.

people would be happy paying a./

charging b/ people tell me i am earning over 130k a year and want it cheaper.

rabbiting on here what im trying to say if its packaged better and sold better you would enjoy the "luxury" of best seats and PE little bit of what the others in cattle class are missing.

Instead it feels like "yes you and your missus extra grand for 6 more inches of leg room that if we took 2 seats out of the plane you would all have"
Although im not huge(fat) and not tall i have a 48+ chest and a 18" neck i take up a fair seat on a plane/bus/train and no longer get into a baby swing:( i feel guilty and try to accommadate others where as you can get a skinny selfish 8 an half stoner taking up their entire allocation of space without thought of others (try sleeping in my corner of her bed with less than a tenth of a begged pillow)although the 8 stoner i encountered on a plane back from turkey tried it for less than 5 minutes until i had found space in a locker for him . His choice /chose well

Hello i'm after some advice. Me and OH are considering NY for NYE 2011. Have seen flights on Opodo, going on 30th dec returning 3rd Jan for £420 each. I see in Marks post that this is top whack but does that pply to New Years Eve too, should I expect to pay more then?

Will the flight prices dramatically change if we leave it til Sept / Oct to book? Not sure if I am keen on booking so far ahead as you never know what may happen between now and then

Have also seen the Ramada New Yorker for these nights for £503. Is this a good choice? been advised midtown west is a good spot and this hotel is near Penn station.

2011? flights arent usually available more than a year in advance. New year is probably the most expensive time you possibly go to, and anywhere else on the planet.

new year is the most expensive time to travel normally maybe OP means this new year comming 2010/2011. New Yorker is a iconic land mark that offers some decent discounts but its in a ok part of town (good daytime and quiet evening) and the rooms are ok (clean but small) "this is only from my reaserch i have never stayed in the new yorker but friend has blame him"

thanks, I fully expect it to be more expensive for NYE. We've wanted to go away for NYE for the past few years but always out of our price range. What I need to know is is £420 reasonable for these flights at this time of the year? Levaing manchester 30th dec 2010 and coming back 3rd jan 2011.
I'm wary about booking a trip so far in advance so if £420 each is a good price for these dates i'd be keen to book now but if there's a chance they'll be a similar price in say sept or oct 2010 then i will wait til then to book.

anyone know how flight prices vary or an indication of how much I might be paying if I wait to book?

I am going to put a downer on this so i apologise!

I just don't think NYC at NYE is worth the hassle, it'll be freezing cold with snow and all sorts so you go out wearing all your thick clothes then walk into a shop who has heating on full blast and then you are too hot.
Times Sq will be heaving and you will have to be there about a month early to probably even get anywhere near any sort of decent place.
Added to the fact every hotel which rips people off all year anyway will now be even more expensive, coupled with flights and an increase in tourists meaning taxi's and the subway will be busier...

No, i just wouldn't bother to be honest.

dustystar - .. what airline, is it direct? what "fare class" is the ticket in.. things like this can help me find out if it is a decent price... (edit - £415 is the cheapest I can find for those dates, direct, from manchester, expedia, book KLM flight, via a Delta Codeshare)

what are your plans for New Years Eve? Are you wanting to go to (god forbid) Times Square at 1pm in the afternoon, stand in the freezing cold with no access to toilets, food and drink, herded into pens like cattle? or are you going to spend in excess of $200 to sit in a chain restaurant and eat mediocre food?

Or do you have a plan that is actually going to be fun?

    Mark

Flights are through Opodo going with KLM, £426, direct there but change in Paris flying with Air France coming back. No set plans for NYE as yet, would consider Times Square, I know you're not a fan but not planning on getting there at 1pm. the Ramada New Yorker is close to Times Sq isn;t it. Really open to suggestions on that one, just know we don't want to be in this country on thh stroke of midnight.

I know NYE is very dear which is why we have never gone away at NYE before but every year we say next year we'll be away and then never do it so I'm wanting to go without fail for 2010/11.
Was planning originally on 4 days in NY then fly to Miami on 3rd Jan for 7 nights before returning to Manchester. Found flights for NY-Miami-Man for £490 each on opodo. Still debating whether to do just NY or NY and Miami.
just need to know if these are reasonable prices to pay at NYE. Will they shoot up in price if we wait to book til later in teh year or do we risk booking now?

EDIT - just checked Opodo again and flights 30/12 Man-NY, 3rd jan NY-Paris-Man gone upto £446.70
  • Hello Everyone, I'm after a bit of advice. Me and hubby travelling from Glasgow to New York 29 April and returning 03 May. Saw direct flights to Newark for around £800 over the last few weeks. Decided to book today but discovered the price has jumped to minimum £1120 for us both. Feel sick that I didn't book last weekend but before I jump straight in and pay extra £300, does anyone think it likely the price will drop again, or is it possible it could rise even more. Our dates are not flexible and have looked at going via London but this increased the travelling time by at least 7 hours including stopovers. (we also have a 6 hour trip to and from Glasgow so the direct flight was perfect). I would appreciate any insight if anyone is in the know.

    Thanks
