  • Coming to NYC on 25th August before going to Vegas for a week. Never been to NYC before which is a bit weird seeing that I've been to the US 8 or 9 times now.........
Anyway, I'm a bit taken aback by the price of NY hotels! I'm thinking of Pricelining or Hotwiring this leg of the trip. When is the best time to do this? Shall I try and get a deal now or wait until a few days before. Ideally want to stay in Manhattan....

    thanks!

    Oi you're in NYC,get off the computer:eek:
    :p

I'd only just landed in NYC and couldn't sleep. My excuse for this reply, is that I've only just woken up, and about the jump in the shower, and admire the view of the brooklyn bridge (yes, at the same time!) http://t.co/JEGZogk http://twitpic.com/474zps

and before you ask about the hotel, this has to be one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on thanks to being a proper Tempur Mattress. I have sofa in the room, plus a soaking tub along with the shower. A balcony, floor to ceiling windows, great view of downtown manhattan, cookies on turndown service, the most amazing and crazy mini bar known to man, ipod/iphone dock (pumping out the tunes as I type).

    Not bad for $200 a night ($125)

I would hang fire a bit before locking yourself into something totally un refundable and changeable. That week until the first weekend in September, is normally cheaper, (so it depends what prices you're taken aback by!), so you should be able to pick up some bargains, come July time quite easily.

It depends what you are looking for with your hotel, and the location you want. If you're more flexible, you'll get a great bargain. You need to quote exact dates, and your budget firstly to see if it is doable. The bear minimum I'd consider spending on a hotel room in NYC is around £100 a night. That'll get you something in a reasonable location, and a reasonable spec. However, you can look at boutique hotels in more alternative locations (still in Manhattan), and get high floor rooms with views, etc, for a little more. It just depends what you really want.

Thanks for the advice. I booked a 1 bedroom suite (which I think is just a big room!) at the Salisbury

Why think if it is a big room? why not browse a hundred photos of the hotel right here - http://www.oyster.com/new-york-city/hotels/salisbury-hotel/photos/ - Dated decor, but perfectly acceptable.

The only stairs you'll encounter are about 2 flights at Chambers Street.
I don't know exactly where they were, but I'm pretty sure we found a lift somewhere to get down to that subway station with our 3 boys and five suitcases ... few years ago now, I know, but probably still there somewhere!

Oh that's excellent - looks more spacious than just a big room from that. Not the most funky of New York hotels but at that price it will do the job for 3 of us!

The elevator is at Chambers Street 1/2/3 rather than the Chambers Street A/C - Now I'm in NYC, if you want, I could go investigate and find out if there is a way from the A/C Lines to get to the lift outside the Cosmopolitan Hotel without having to get any stairs. There may well be. But, if there is, surely the Chambers 1/2/3 would be called Chambers 1/2/3/A/C then?! ;)

Oyster is a great website, you really get a feel for the hotel before you actually get there.

If it helps, we were going from the Cosmo to Grand Central Station. No idea at this stage which lines we were using. Seem to remember we crossed a few roads to get to it. But it's all a long time ago, and while I haven't had brain surgery since then, I'm sure there were some vital memories stored in the bit of arm bone they've replaced, which cause serious mental lapses from time to time.

Thanks, I'll defo hang fire until later in the year. I thought I could get a room in a 4* for about £600/700 for the week. Imagine my horror on Expedia when it was coming back £1,200 + :o
I guess I'm too used to staying in plush hotels in Vegas for buttons. I'll budget for about £125 ish a night, hopefully get something nice for that :)
Can't wait until my holiday, seems such a long way off :(
