Hi, I could do with some advice please. We are booked to go to New York for 3 days in late July (a stopover before main holiday in Florida), 2 adults + a 17 year old. We haven't booked the hotel yet, have just been looking around & seems we'll need to be paying at least £150/night including taxes for anything reasonably central (looked at 4 points Sheraton midtown Times square). Would we be better waiting until nearer the time & hope for a good deal to come up on e.g. travelzoo, or with us needing a room for 3, would we be better to book now in case prices go up. Thanks for any advice.

Have you looked at hotels on quikbook. There are plenty of hotels on there that don't require a prepayment, so you can always book something, and then change your mind.

When using that site, it will be easier to work in $, so your £150 including taxes currently translates to around $205 per night excluding taxes, which is how the site will display the prices.

I would look further afield than just Times Square though, as you'll be able to get better hotels and prices, look at things like the Affinia Chain of hotels, as most of their rooms are suite based too.

Anyone recommend a hotel at Newark airport? Travelling alone and arrive late at night... Read mixed reviews so any advice welcome.
  • Hi, I would like some advice. I am flying into JFK at 8.20am on 16th August, then flying out the same day at 18.40.

Having never been to NYC before I wondered if this is long enough for me to visit the city itself, rather than stay in the airport? If so, could somone tell me how long it takes to get to the centre, costs, possible activities to do etc?

Thanks in advance for your help

I was working on £150/night - $150/night would be great! Most deals require you to book a nonrefundable rate. I was wondering about how good some of these secret deals are......

:rotfl: Sorry! Was reading what I wanted to see... I left the computer thinking wow a great deal!!

i have some time off work from 10th - 20th so can pretty much be flexible in those dates but i was looking to do 14th - 17th/18th

i havent really set myself a strict budget looking at anything from £650 - £850 for flights + hotel at the momment, have seen a couple of places i like the sound of, checked them out on trip advisor too.

i cant get too serious about booking anything yet until i get my passport back :(

Have you looked on lastminute.com? They have some good deals on at the moment. Not sure whether you are interested in going for 5 days

    Where are you travelling from?
  • Could anyone tell me if six flags in New Jersey is worth a visit? we are going to nY in June for 7 nights so wanted to spend the day here (if it's worth it). We won't be hiring a car but I believe we can catch a bus there.

Just sorting out a few things for my trip and have been looking around and wondered if someone could answer a couple of questions.

Would I need to carry my passport/Esta/insurance around with me while in NYC?

I hear there's tax added at the till when buying items, is it a fix rate for everything?

    Thanks

Nope no need to carry docs around with you, however if you are going to ge out of towners discount cards in certain shops you will need proof of citizenship.

Sales tax has changed in the last few months and seeing as you dont say when you are going have a look at this:

"Effective October 1, 2010 and lasting through March 31, 2011, statewide sales and use tax exemption for clothing and footwear sold for less than $110 will be eliminated. For New York City, this means article of clothing costing less than $110 will now be charged 4.375% tax. A state sales tax exemption for clothing and footwear under $55 will be reinstated from April 1, 2011 through March 31, 2012. The original ($110) exemption will be reinstated after March 31, 2012"
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
