Which hotels were you looking at in particular? Some trip advisor reviews can be taken with a pinch of salt but at least you changed your mind after the reviews before you booked anything!0

radisson on broadway, the empire and park central , i'll just be patient and browse a little more going to concentrate on madison square garden area.0

Really? There isn't much around Madison Square Garden, apart from the concrete donut that is Madison Square Garden. Oh, and traffic, and more traffic.
The Park Central keeps cropping up as options, and I've not heard people say bad things about it. If you want, you could look in Murray Hill area, a little more residential, but a few good hotels are there, things like the St Giles - The Court and St Giles - Tuscany.
A lot of brand new hotels are cropping up more south of 14th Street, you have the Trump Soho just opened last year, The Mondrian Soho, is opening this month, and in April, there is the nolitan.0 -
madison square area on kayak is looking promising, DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel New York City - Chelsea looks good or the holiday inn on 6th avenue0
-
The Doubletree - Chelsea - is in Chelsea in the loosest possible sense.. about 5 blocks too far north. It's not in the prettiest kinda area, but near some subway lines so useful for getting out and about.
Chelsea itself offers some great areas for food, drink, and sightseeing though, just head south west a bit, and you'll be in chelsea.
I love how inventive some hotels are with their locations.0 -
Edit: Never mind0

Don't bother with the high street chains. Look for a Cheque Centre, or a place that offers the service from no1 currency. $1.55 ain't bad, but you'll have got a better rate with a fairfx card, or a nationwide account, etc etc.0 -

You can reserve online.. I got some $ for 1.60, the rate has gone up slightly0
