The beauty about paypal is that you can get your money back for PRODUCTS. An Apartment rental falls under a SERVICE, and is not covered. If the apartment exists, (and bear in mind, homeaway.com and vrbo.com will NOT vet and check apartments to make sure they actually exist, or are legal, as these companies are commercial entities and are just a listing service), then you would have to argue with who you booked with to get money back. Also, if you even ask if they are legal, of course they are going to say yes...

Thanks for that info about paypal

  • Hi just wondering what you guys would prefer to do.

Do you prefer to fly back to UK in the morning (around 10), or the night flight (around 7)?

    Thanks.

Night flight means you virtually get another day so thats my vote.

We arrive at lunch time in the US and leave as late as poss so we arrive back in the UK in the morning.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
  • Thanks Phatbear - do you feel really tired or get jet lag when you do the overnight flight?

We leave usually at 19.00-20.00 and when we arrive back in the uk our bodies tell us its 02.00-03.00 so yup we get tired but you're more likely to sleep on the fight back to the uk

  • Yeah I've noticed that autumn flights are going out from an hour later 7.20 pm instead of 6.20 pm, a bit annoying as will arrive back in London around 4am NY time.

No. Discussion of things illegal is not allowed on these forums. Just because you wish to break the law, shouldn't mean that you can encourage others to do the same to save a few pounds.

The new bill is effective from then, but that does not mean the old bills (plural, as there are multiple ones), are not valid suddenly, and it is legal to rent apartments for under 30 days

Think about an apartment block and the fact that when you live there, you will know your neighbours, maybe not by name, but by face. Do you really want strangers in this block, trapsing in and out, maybe leaving the door open, and anyone can wander around, these are people that have not applied for a home in the block, a process that you had to go through yourelf. There are laws in NYC about Coops, and these groups own apartments, then they vet, along with other residents. If somone sublets, then it has to be within the terms. If not, it is illegal.

I've gone on about this before, and I understand that accommodation is expensive, but to ignore laws, just to save money is one argument I had far too much on here, and is one reason why I've not posted anything in nearly 9 months, because I get bored of repeating myself.

Wow! Who knew an innocent trying to be helpful post or two would cause such a response!

There is plenty of data out there to show that homeaway - as a company - is a legit company - here is one just example http://www.tnooz.com/2010/07/26/news/homeaway-turns-attention-to-london-after-new-york-rental-woe/- and my research has shown that it is not illegal to rent apartments in NY for less than 30 days in all cases. I mentioned co-ops in an earlier post. But that real enforcement would kick in in May 2011 if the bill is passed, which is not certain at this point in time.

Yes - the apartment I have booked could be a scam and homeaway don't know it yet but I'm reasonably confident through my OWN research of my particular apartment - which is a basement flat with own entrance and exit points so not sharing of communal doors is legit and legal. And so I was trying to be helpful on a moneysaving forum to provide alternate options to someone struggling with hotel costs.

We'll see but it was booked through creditcard to offer the additional protection. And if I get scammed I'll be sure to name and shame. It's not against the rules to give advice on that is it??! ;)

Thanks for the polite warnings from others.
