How much time, realistically , to visit the Statue of Liberty?
We have pedestal tickets for 11am next Thursday and I'm unsure whether to do just Liberty island or to go to Ellis island as well? Is it worth going?

Planning on Top of the rock about 4 - 5 pm and then Empire state building late at night, because it's close to our hotel, The Metro.

  • I'm struggling to find a cheap hotel for my trip :( looks like it'll have to be a hostel as our budget for accommodation is only about £90 a night for 7 nights for a room with 2 beds, the one that we found affordable was the carter hotel but it was voted the dirtiest hotel in america 3 years running so thats a no-go :(

    what about an aprtment?

    (£90 x7) 630.00 GBP=968.889 USD

That's what we are doing.. See

it looks like you could get a nice aprtment for your money.

Please do not rent an apartment from here. Vacation rentals like this are illegal in NYC. You may end up getting thrown out of the apartment and have nowhere to stay or it could be a scam. Please have a look at the forum and FAQs on Trip Advisor. There are a couple of apartment like hotels that are legal and they are mentioned in the forums.

Oh dear - that's what we're doing! We've booked three nights and paid a deposit of $200 - really hope we don't get scammed/thrown out!

    We booked through http://www.vrbo.com/

I don't want to panic you but its not something I would risk. Have a read on Trip Advisor and maybe ask their advice. I would try and get somewhere else booked and get my money back. Even if you don't get scammed or thrown out it is illegal..

    Hi All!

Just wondering if anyone has done a helicopter ride over New York? I'd like to do it and wondered if anyone can recommend the best way to book this? Also, was it worth doing? ;)

    Thanks!

They dont get good reports on the TA site
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

On the map front on the last trip we took a New York moleskine with us, its small and the great thing is its like a diary so you can keep notes about things you want to see and do and also record things you have done, useful for trip reports etc. The book also comes with some acetate pages so you can stick them to the map and highlight places to visit.

Only slight niggle is the map doesnt show the subways on the map, however is has a seperate map in the book too.

I loved my NY moleskine! Fab! I still have tickets etc in the pocket at the back. Ahhhh memories.....:D

Have re-done our itinerary, can someone give it the once over please?

Fly out saturday 9th October to JFK, land at 13.30. Staying at the Cosmopolitan in Tribeca so should be there by 4?

Saturday afternoon - Brooklyn bridge (photos etc), Staten Island Ferry (hopefully at sunset which seems to be about 18-18:30), China Town / Little Italy for a mosey round and some food.

Sunday - Macys, Times Square, Central Park (Strawberry fields, Bethesda Terrace, Belvedere Castle, Turtle Pond), FAO Schwarz

Monday is Columbus day, so hopefully that won't affect things? - Empire State (probably fairly early to get everything else in!), Grand Central Station, Some of the parade up fifth avenue, Bloomingdales, back to Rockefeller centre for sunset tickets (18:00ish), then possible ice skating.

Tuesday - Ground Zero, Possbiyl Century 21 for a bit of shopping.

Now, the tricky bit - we have a flight onto Las Vegas which leaves at 18:05. Delta web-site reckons a 60 minute check in. Plus 60 minute cab ride to the airport. So if a taxi is booked for 14:30, that'll be ample time, right? We've 90 mins in hand. Or will we need a longer check in as we're not American citizens? Advice on this would be most handy!

    Thanks very much!

Bloomies is on 59th and Lex therefore its mega close to the south east corner of central park and fao schwartz is on 58th and 5th so you could do the pair on the same day, ie sunday.

Dont forget to take your passport to macys and bloomies and pop into the customer service area to get your 10% out of towners discount.

Last trip we accidentaly ended up on the staten island ferry as the sun was setting behing the statue of liberty and it was amazing.

Personally still dont see the point of esb and top of the rock but each to their own.

Check in has nothing to do with your nationality, 60mins cab ride is pushing it, last trip it was well over an hour but that was mainly due to the weather.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
