For tickets try the shop just off Times Square or the shop down in South Street Seaport ............ But we always use "Stubhub" before we go !

Hi everyone. My son and girlfriend are going to New York next month and son is the sort who worries over every little detail. They are staying in Cosmopolitan in Tribeca. Do you think it's safe to use the subway late at night or should they get taxis?

We stayed at the Cosmo - used the subways and walked around at night - in fact walked to Chinatown with no problems.
In fact we stay in Travelodges in London a fair bit and felt far safer in NY than I ever do in London.
As others have advised as long as they don't flash the cash and just mould in they will be fine.
  • Thanks everyone for your help. We have now decided to give woodbury common a miss, and walk around central park. as someone said, it will cost more to get to woodbury, than any savings we will make, as not buying much. uggs are showing as $190 at bloomingdales online, so that's a good price anyway.

Dont forget your UGGS's will be subject to 8.875% sales tax too, as any clothing or footwear over $110 is. However if you pop to the customer service section with your passport they will give you an out of towners 10% discount card which will offset the tax.

A couple of trips ago Mrs Phatbear managed to pick up some UGG boots and shoes in century 21, but on the last trip they didnt have any but its worth a look, think the boots were $120'ish

How long have you got inbetween connections? Amsterdam is a massive airport and depending on where in the airport you are connecting your flight may mean that your bags don't fly with you. A friend did a connecting flight through there, she only just made it to to her connection but her bags didn't.

Is this just Amsterdam or other connections? I'm changing twice in America to get to Hawaii, and then flying back to America and changing to get to New York after. In total 6 different planes for a visit to Hawaii and New York...

  • Hi everyone,

I am due to visit NYC for the first time in a couple of weeks with my boyfriend and I have a list of things I want to try and fit in but as I have no idea where anything is in relation to eachother, how long journey times are etc. I am struggling with creating an itinerary! I want to make every second count!

My flight lands at 13.30 at JFK (people have told us to allow 2 hours to get out of the airport, is this correct?) then we are staying at the Hudson Hotel (356 West 58th Street) and we are yet to decide how to get there. I have considered bus, metro and taxi (what would be my best bet, how long would each take and what would the cost be?)

So then we have Saturday late afternoon/evening free, Sunday (plan to go to Woodbury Common), all of Monday and Tuesday Morning (need to leave after lunch)

And here are a list of things we want to do: have a walk through central park (not a long walk, thinking maybe early one morning) visit empire state OR rockerfeller (which is best, go to Carnegie Deli, Serendipity 3 for frozen hot chocolate, Possibly Katz Deli (?), Possibly Magnolia for cupcakes, Possibly Century 21, Visit Ground Zero, Go the big department stores Macys, Dwayne Reed Pharmacy, Canal Street, Bloomingdales, Tiffany and Pandora stores. Maybe Brooklyn Bridge if we can fit it in? Food wise, gotta try a good NY pizzza/hotdog, would like to try a nice steakhouse, american style breakfast (maybe pancakes), possibly a chinese too and CRAB LEGS (love these). Maybe check out some nice cocktail type bars in the evening??

Are there any other must do/sees??

Can anyone suggest what we do on each day? And how we travel to and from the airport?

    Thanks in advance smile.gif
  • Also, I was just wondering what the rules and regulations are about bringing kids clothes back from NY. One of my main motivations for going is to shop and I have a toddler (who we are leaving at home) and would like to bring him stuff back.
People have said take the tags off etc. and screw things up like they have been worn. but obviously can't do this with kids stuff as he won't be with us!
Also, will it arouse suspicion if we take fairly empty holdalls and fill them up for the way back?
    How strict is it etc?
We aren't going to go mad, but want to buy clothes, shoes, bags etc smile.gif

    Thanks

Allowance is £320 I believe? Correct me if I am wrong someone.
As long as you aren't going mad spending a fortune buying top end designer baby wear you should be fine. Yes I believe most people do that I usually take all my tags off unless presents or souvenirs but I do this as I dont take very much clothing with me then most of the things I buy I wear whilst I am there like my uggs etc.

My vote for scattyest post of the day by a country mile ,
    Too many questions to answer
Get yourself a map (or just google maps one ) look at it find the touristy areas you want to see and visit then put them in some sort of order and bunch them together ?? Why Dwayne Read Phamacy theres millions of the !!!!!!s. Do Top of the Rock and ESB if you want different experinces IMO but do ToR 1st. Get a list together then the clever people can help more . So long as its not too much clothing thats in bulk and labelled you should be ok Phatbear has the proper rules but i think you know your taking the P*** a little and so do they so be careful Enjoy NYC
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world

The duty free allowance is £390 per person.

The actions you are describing is breaking the law, i've heard those customs chaps are quite clever and have ways and means of finding out if you are lying to them and then the snap of latex gloves is usually the next step.
