Hi,
I am new to this forum and not sure if this is the correct place to post. I am looking to take a holiday with my family ( 3 adults and 2 children) to New York after a pleasurable holiday to Orlando last year, (Our first ever trip to the USA!)
We are looking to go for around about 10 - 14 days ideally in late August and so far the cheapest price I have found for flights is £2500, Orlando last year was £1700, and hotels are around about £2500 mark. Orlando was only £1200. I think New York is slightly more expensive anyway, but there appears to be a general trend of rising prices in comparison to last year.
I was just wondering if anybody who has been to New York could recommend any sites or travel agents, or provide any useful tips on how to cut the price of our holiday. This may be ambitious, but I was hoping to get the holiday all in with care hire at around £4500. At the moment everything seems quite daunting with a lot of research involved! Last year Hotel and theme park tickets was done through Disney which made life a lot easier.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Tony0 -

first off in my opinion 10-14 days is too long for NYC i would do 7 max and maybe have a week elsewhere, also you will not need a car in NYC it is very busy and a car would be a PITA not to mention the cost of parking.the transport is very good in new york.
last time i went i did a twin centre of nyc 7 days and barbados 7 days through virgin maybe have a look on the virgin site see what they have on offer that appeals and then post on the travel agents beat my quote thread?0 -

Agreed. For your first trip to NYC you may run out of things to do especially if you are going with children.0 -
Hi,

New York is expensive especially for accomodation. For the most basic hotels you are looking at $120 a night, which can rise to around $250 for middle range and even higher for luxury hotels. Maybe try having a look on expedia to see what prices are coming up there to give you inital ideas on cost.
Also, as you are going in August, it may be worth checking out the average temperatures for that time of year. August is a muggy and humid month over there, which according to one of my friends is why its a bit cheaper as no one wants to go - not sure how true this is. When i looked at the weather the other day, it was reaching temperatures of 36 to 40 degress c - but think thats quite unusaul for the time of year.0 -
Oh dear now I am worried, that's about the 5th time I've been asked that.
I really appreciate you are only trying to help really I do but How can I find out if it is what she would like without spoiling the suprise?
I don't want to start asking her random questions about New York etc. or she'll just get suspicious.
Any ideas?
Ask one of her friends? Though be warned my husband asked a friend if i'd like a bike or a ring for our 10th anniversary, she said a bike! Wrong! :rotfl: I'd like New York and I'm just over 40!
If you do go I would suggest the christmas show at the radio city music hall with the rockettes. We heard about it on our tour, it sounds fab. Or another show Billy Elliot, or Wicked maybe and let her do some serious shopping, sounds a perfect 40th birthday to me.0 -

Hello
We (2 adults/2 kids) are staying in NY for 3 nights from 16/10/10 with another family (2 adults/3 kids) and are looking for suitable hotels-however we have come across the problem for the family of 5 that hotels only cater for upto 4 people so would need 2 rooms which does boost the cost
I was originally looking at the the Ramada Limited Jersey City which had mainly good reviews but there were a few about bedbugs! I have seen the Cosmopolitan recommended on this thread
The other family were considering just getting one room with 2 double beds and squeezing all 5 in but I am not so sure-do you think they would get away with this?
many thanks

Have you had a look at Trip Advisor Yoghurt? Try posting a question on there, the locals are very good at advising about hotels.Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -

:rotfl: OK, does she like shopping? (and, more importantly, will you indulge her? I'm still aggrieved because I never got to Tiffany's or any of the other wonderful places!)
That might work.
Well as it happens she's not really big on shopping for clothes but I'm sure she'd love a trip to Tiffany's, I got her a Tiffany's bracelet last xmas and also got her one a couple of years ago for her birthday. She loved them both so perhaps this xmas I can just give her the brochure and tell her she can go collect her chosen one in person from the New York store:)
I think I might try asking her friend or even her sister to try and get some clues as to whether or not she'd be into a trip to NY.0
