OMG!!! I have such a headache! I cannot decide on a hotel. We are going for 7 nights at the beginning of Sept. Never been before. I have a few hotels on my short list, the Beacon, Cosmo and the Libary (thanks to Tripadvisor) I havent even checked if they are available yet but Im so lost. I think I will just email all three tomorrow directly to see what they offer. Im expecting to spend between £800 - £1000 for this accom.

Are there any others I should consider? Im just after something thats easy to get about as we are there to be proper tourists and with our own bathroom.

I have checked the list at the beginning of this thread but there isnt much recent info on there. Any recommendations for a stressed traveller!?? Thanks in advance all. x

I wouldn't email the hotels directly, but search all the websites for good deals and just keep an open mind on where you are going to stop. You are more likely to get a bargain if you aren't set on a certain hotel or certain area.

I would check, ebookers, expedia, lastminute.com, skyscanner, the holiday inn family and friends website, affinia.com, quikbook.

    Hope this helps.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help in previous threads.

As ive mentioned previously, me and my wife to be (married in 2 weeks and 4 days!)

We're holding off on the Honeymoon until October. I got a really good deal on my flights (11th - 18th October) but im keeping an eye on the hotel prices at the moment.

The problem is - we don't have enough money to book a hotel until after the wedding (around 3 weeks) and the prices seem to be going up.

A week or so ago I found the New Yorker for this week for around £1200, whereas now its £1550.

From experience, does anyone know if this trend will continue?

If so I might have to look at another hotel :(

It will be July 24th at the very earliest that I can book anything.

    Thanks, Chris.

Hotel prices will depend on load. What I would suggest is not get so stuck on a hotel but keep your mind open and you might get a good deal.

Ebookers has the New Yorker at £1375 for your dates
Best Western President £1275 plus taxes through the best western website ( just been renovated, I like the look of this one for us)

I really would consider Priceline for your hotels. New York is an expensive city, but I still refuse to pay more than £120 per night (including taxes!) and always get very good quality hotels.*

Having said that, prices are always very hit and miss. I am going to NYC, Boston and Philadelphia next week :T and am actually finding Boston more expensive than NYC!

    * I was going to say 4*+ hotels, but I find in NYC the star rating does not count for a great deal, and there are some 3* places that are much better than some 4*!
    Gone ... or have I?

We are going to NY in October,we have a Virgin package which includes transfers, does anyone know the name of the company that Virgin use?

(I was thinking of getting a taxi if it is the bad company that is slated on TA.)

If we do get the Taxi, I am assuming that you just go to the Yellow cabs outside and tell 'em where you want to go?

When you get there do you ask them how much you owe them? ( as you would in the UK) or do you give them the (is it $45?) plus toll ( is there more than one? we are going to Beacon on UWS) plus tip?

By the time we get there we will be very tired so want to know what I am doing!

It's 9 years since we were in USA so we will be fingerprinted and the rest. Does this mean we will be ages getting through alll the security?

Someone on this thread implied that you go through security before getting your luggage, is this true? and does it cause any problems?

Finally, are all airlines the same on arrival? what I mean is does everyone just pile into the one big customs/security que?

(I wondered if anyone could/would be kind enough to talk me through the routine upon landing, as I said I have not been to US since 2001 and a lot has changed since then)

    Thank you all in advance:D

firstly i went with virgin in 07 and had no problem with the transfers cannot remember the name of them, although they might have changed since then.
there are numerous terminals at JFK so not all flights pile in to 1 arrivals area i did not have any major problems when passing through there.
i have been to the US several times but every time i have had to do all the fingerprint and iris stuff so you will get no extra checking on top of anyone who has been recently.
as for taxi if you choose that way they are just outside terminal tell driver where you are going, fare is $45 plus tolls and tips should be around $60 but just ask driver when you get to hotel that is what i would do anyway.

Assuming you are flying into JFK for cabs you wander outside and they are there a dispatcher will ask you where you want to go and they will direct you to a cab the fare is fixed to anywhere in manhattan, which is $45 + tolls and tip so $60. One very important thing is do not assume the driver will know where your hotel is you will need to know your street and cross street or you've got no chance of getting to your hotel, even knowing this info is'nt always a guarantee you will get where you want to go as often the drivers first language isnt english, therefore I usually have the hotel name and street and cross street written down for the driver, just in case.

At JFK you will go through border control before you get your bags, this is where you will have passport checked and pic and prints taken, then get your bags and walk through customs with your bags. Time taken getting through of course will depend on the amount of flights down at that time and amount of staff on. In our 4 trips to NY we have never taken more than 45mins to get through border control-get our bags-get through customs-get into a cab.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right
