How are the other cats behaving around him? Have they accepted their new brother yet?

Thanks chica, looks like it won't apply to us then because we're not on any benefits, but still worth asking.

This cat is a stray not your own, I bet if you explain they will give you a voucher as you are not trying to cheat the system or anything you are trying to help! :) Much better for them than him getting some feral ladies PG and they have to PTS the kittens as they are FIV or something. :(

There are loads of people on Purrsinourhearts forums that help with rescues - mostly CP and small independents - maybe post on there for any advice? I have known them post each other vouchers before when people have taken in random cats but are feeling the pinch.

ETA: Not suggesting any rescue PTS all feral or all FIV kittens, but FIV means they would need to be indoor cats and it's not always possible to tame a feral kitty that much.

My friend isn't on benefits but she had her cat done for £18 at the local vets, she just asked about the CP voucher because she was skint and they said as long as people aren't obviously rolling in money they do it because it's better than multitudes of unwanted kittens!

Weeellll it's early days, put it that way. Guinness developed a wee infection almost as a direct result of seeing a cat near his food! (although it was probably the new litter) He's very easily stressed, and I think this will be tough for him... but we'll give it our best shot.

The dividing door is glass so they can at least see each other, and there's been a bit of yowling but this morning they seem to have gotten used to the idea and didn't even bother looking through. Now he's outside, I've opened up the kitchen and Pumpkin was having a good ol sniff at everything... I'll continue to keep them separate, swap them into the different areas to familiarise, keep lots of treats handy, swap them back, maybe let them have a little sniff through a crack in the door, and just keep doing that for a while to see how it goes. They'll not actually be allowed in the same room for some time I think.
So the short answer is .. er.. no!

Aside from the above, anyone got any other tricks whilst he's staying with us? Talcum powder?! Just remembering to the days when we introduced gerbils!

ah I remember introducing Missy and Coco and I did pretty much what you've done. I wouldn't use talcum powder as Im pretty sure that I read it's poisonous to cats (don't quote me on it but just make sure before you use it).

I put talc in my army boot's which are next to me as I'm giving them a bull up!If that's the case,I'll have to put them away from Daisy!
  • You could try rubbing the different cats with each other's sleeping blankies to try and mix their scents together

  • Gonzo's been in for a bit of dins, and then wanted to go straight back out again, so we'll just see if he comes back or not tonight. At least it's not as cold as last night and it gives him a chance to return home if he has one :)

Back in 2007 an un-neutered male turned up on our doorstep in a dreadful thin state with a huge abscess above one eye. He was part ferral and a little aggressive, but had a sweet side.

We phoned the cat's protection, who asked us to take him to a specified vet and have him neutered on their account, then asked us to foster him until a new owner could be found. A new owner did appear a couple of weeks later but unfortunately turned out to be an old lady who developed a shoulder problem and couldn't do it.

By the time she'd definitely confirmed she wasn't having him it had been 5 weeks. Paws well and truly under the table. Hubby fell in love with him and wobbled his bottom lip when I said he had to go.

Fast forward 2.5 years and the cat is currently asleep on the computer chair. Hubby is perched on the edge of the sofa to read his emails so he doesn't disturb him ;)

He knew which house had the soft touches in.....
