Nip him to the nearest vets and they will, free of charge scan him for microchips.. and make sure he hasn't got anything your bunch might catch that is the main priority.

His wee may just be very concentrate giving it a dark colour and changes in diet can cause problems.. a diet of dry food also absolutely kills the kidneys in cats, they don't naturally drink so wet food is an absolute must. if he has been dumped he may also have been beaten or mistreated before hand... which is less likely given his friendliness.

Then you ring the cats rescue places to see if he has been reported missing and put up posters/leaflets whatever you fancy... if noone claims him.. you can!

Let's just say.. I have 6.. 1 was found tied up in a carrier bag in a bin.. then was shot in the face so has only one eye.. 1 was going to be dumped at RSPCA who immediately kill kittens and the other 2 were supposed to be being rehomed but noone wanted girl kittens so they stayed because OH got attached.. I got the older 2 when one of mine was killed by a car.

The OP diesn't have to let the RSPCA take the cat, just say it's a stray and can remain in their garden and ask if the vets bills can be covered.

Put a collar on the kitty, with a note asking the real owner to phone you to let you know he DOES have a home.

Have you thought of a name yet?

ROFL not sure we're quite there yet .. but the other half thinks he should be called Dr Gonzo. Not quite sure why..

Slight update: looks like the kitty with the wee issues.. is my Guinness!! _pale_ he was running to and from the tray all night.. Odd though, didn't notice anything until yesterday... but he's easily stressed, the poor little flower :( and we've been mixing chick crumb in with his usual litter, I suspect that isn't agreeing with him.

Anyways, no sign of the lil' monster this morning, was a cold night, I hope he found somewhere warm to stay..

Ok, well you'll be glad to know that they're both booked in at the vet first thing tomorrow (will be an interesting car journey!!), so hopefully Guinness can wee straight again, and we'll find out a little more about our mysterious Doctor Gonzo..

If nothing comes up chip wise, it'll be time to put up some posters, but we'll definitely keep it inside from tonight onwards anyway.

One thing nagging at the back of my mind now though... is that although 'he' seemed underweight...I noticed a very slightly distended tummy when we picked 'him' up. I have a terrible feeling we might have a girl cat on our hands, with kittens on the way... I just really hope that isn't the case - as cute as they are, there are definitely enough lonely kitties in the world ... :(

Pregnant cats can be spayed. I know it's not a nice thing to think of but at the end of the day who is going to be able to guarantee that the kitties won't end up abandoned as adults as this cat seems to be. Everybody loves a kitten but sadly the supply far outstrips the demand.

It's possible that he might be a lady as you say, however kitties tummies become distended when they have worms. Sorry, don't mean to give you the heebee geebees. It's pretty clear that Doc Gonzo hasn't been looked after recently and has probably been living rough for a while, so s/he may have acquired some parasites from food that s/he has caught. It's not such a big problem for you - just good thorough hand washing will keep you safe but don't go kissing him/her! Guinness will be OK if he has been wormed in the past 3 months or so. Whether s/he has passengers of the wriggly or kitty variety the vet will be able to sort things out.

Thanks Princess, sadly I wholeheartedly agree. If that is what we're looking at, it's not an easy thing to consider, my heart breaks just thinking of it :( but they would almost certainly go straight to a shelter, and considering our two are rescue cats, how could we justify burdening them with more unwanted animals?

Lets hope its just a boy cat with a fat tum!!!

ewwwwwwwww lol. S'ok, I would 100% rather he had worms than baybee kitties!! I'm sure he or she will be wormed tomorrow, so not long to wait.

I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
