Lots of people pass over white cats in rescue tho. :(

    NOOOOOOOOOO!

I didn't know that although I did know that lots of pure black darlings are overlooked in rescues. I'm all of a quandary now as I'd already decided that when one day I'm a no-cat household again I'd re-home a little blackie. Looks like I might be torn now.
  • Some potentially interesting news on the Gonzo front.

We went out tonight to drop leaflets through doors in the surrounding streets, and while we were out we got chatting to a local and his son who think he may be the same cat that visited them for a while, although they didn't seem to think he had any white on him (kinda hard to miss).
Anyway, they pointed us in the direction of a house down the street where they think 4 or 5 cats live.

So I guess we have a dilemma if it turns out to be their cat. He's obviously not well looked after, covered in knots, wandering the neighbourhood, starving hungry and not neutered, but then some owners are like that.

But if he has a home and is returning there, and they're not calling us, what then? I certainly don't want to be rehoming a cat that belongs to someone, but if they can't be bothered to even contact us, then I think we probably have no choice. There is of course always the possibility that these guys assumed he had a home, but never really made sure.

Well I stuck one of the notes we posted on his collar with a friendly message asking to call, so it's impossible to miss, and sent him on his way. Let's see what happens next.

The friends of mine sold me my black cat cheaply because no-one seemed to want her, whereas her tabby littermates flew out of the door :(

That said she does have long, high maintenance hair, which might have put people off.

I have a tabby and a black and white cat but I think I'd like an all white cat - you don't really see many around do you?

I must admit to having a slight phobia of all black cats after staying at a friend's house when I was younger and I woke up to see her HUGE black cat inches from my face. When I flinched he launched himself at me and left me with three big scrams on my face.

    I wouldn't mind a deaf cat.

at least it might not be scared all the time!

I've got a tortie and white cat (she's in my avatar) and the noise level in the house really freaks her out, sometimes she goes and hides under my bed when the kids get in from school!

  • I haven't Googled it although I know I can but I always believed that with pure white cats it was only the one sex which was most likely to be deaf and for some reason it was males. A deaf cat would suit me, I think, because all of my previous kitty darlings have been indoors only babes. Well, except for the one fluff-bucket who was allowed out and got run over right outside. On a cul-de-sac right by a speed-bump. Never again!

Both all black cats and all white cats are passed over, go for the one you have chosen! According to CP the reason people give for not wanting a white cat is shedding which I thought kind of came with the territory.

Lots of white cats in rescues ... my local CP had two when I adopted Noah. Bet CatChat or Purrsinourhearts could find you the perfect all white rescue if you posted. :)

"Researchers found that only 17 to 22 percent of white cats with non-blue eyes are born deaf. The percentage rises to 40 percent if the cat has one blue eye, while upwards of 65 to 85 percent of all-white cats with both eyes blue are deaf. Some of these cats are deaf in only one ear. Interestingly, if a white cat with one blue eye is deaf in only one ear, that ear will invariably be on the same side of the head as the blue eye."
