    Hi all

I was always confused about how you measured your intake of fluids, and what counted towards the 2 litres per day, until my RC consultant told me to count anything that doesn't have caffeine, sweeteners or alcohol in it. That is obviously only her take on it, but it does narrow it down a bit. I like plain water, sometimes cold, sometimes hot, and I like herbal tea. You could also have decaffeinated tea or coffee, and still count it. Fizzy drinks (of any kind) wouldn't count, however you can still drink them.

I've just done a quick review of the drinks I've had today and so far, I haven't had any that count towards the 2 litres - I've only had tea and coffee  so I'm going to set myself a challenge to stick to non caffeinated drinks for the rest of the day!

And, apparently, it's drinking lots of caffeinated drinks that make you go to the loo more often, because of their diuretic effect. When you drink water, it's stored in the organs and skin and keeps us healthily hydrated. That might horrify people into worrying about a weight gain, but if you do this all the time as a regular part of your diet, the effect is minimal.

  • i was told that not only can you not count caffeinated drinks, they actually cut down your good fluid intake - so if you drink 8 glasses of water and 4 cups of coffee, you can only count 4 glasses of water and have to drink another 4 to get up to your 8 a day! Having heard that I dropped the fizz and started to stick with water. I have a SW question if anyone can help . . . just looking at my green healthy extras list and it has 28g of hoummus and 57g of hoummus. I'm confused! And are fruit cheeses really really bad? I had 28g of wensleydale with cranberries as a HEA at weekend and added 1 syn just in case. Is there a more scientific way of doing that?

Sounds like everyone is making tons of progress this week. Honey are you happy to be staying put?
  • thats funny you should ask about the houmous. i was reading exactly the same thing last night after i had houmous and carrots and was wondering how it works. I was going to ask at the sw meeting on monday.
    HOW MUCH ?
  • Hi all can I join you all!?

My name is Kim and I gave birth 5 weeks ago and I really, really need to lose weight and become fit again!!

My current weight is 16 stone and I am 6ft 1" tall and I want to get down to around 12 stone.

I used to be 10 stone, about 5 years ago but after 2 children, not exercising and eating lots of naughty food I have ended up where I am now. I have decided to finally knuckle down and do something about it, so far this week I have walked 11 miles with a hefty tandem pushcahir and biked 3 miles, and I am going to cut down on all the crap I eat (easier said than done ha ha!)

My husband currently commutes so I am unable to do join any clubs or anything because he would never be home in time to look after our children so I am going to try and do it alone!

    Sorry for going on

Hi Kim, Welcome to the thread. You'll get plenty of advice and support on here. I'm just concerned that maybe you are starting too soon after the birth of your baby - congratulations by the way, what did you have?

Just take it easy - you need your strength, more than ever at this point!

Katie - much happier now that we have decided to stay where we are and extend. It was all getting too stressful.
  • Hi thanks for the welcome, I had a little (well huge 101b 130z!!) baby girl, I am getting worried now, didn't really think it might be too soon, they say 6 weeks, so I figured a week early would be ok, I had an uncomplicated birth and feel fine now, do u think I will be ok?

Hi KPC - that used to confuse me too, and there are other similar examples, such as 2 Ryvita or 4 Ryvita. I think SW have added these smaller healthy extras in some cases because the smaller portion gives you the healthy element you need, i.e. fibre, so it might help with weight loss if you're trying to cut back a bit more. Our resident SW consultant may have a different explanation. :)

     Was she overdue?

    Congratulations!!
Why dont you ask your health visitir when you see her next. I just wouldn't overdo it too much and you need to make sure you are eating the right things, especially if you are breastfeeding. Consultant may be able to advise you on when SW recommend nursing mothers join class. Good Luck - I saw your other thread about the scales - forget them - they add too much stress. Can you weigh yourself one a week in Boots  Get a tape measure and take some measurements - bust hips waist etc and compare them in a few weeks, Sometimes you lose inches but weigh the same - I know there are plenty of us on here who would advise you against the scales - have a read back, I think most recently as yesterday someone was asking about scales (and probably wished they hadn't :rotfl: )

Nice to have you with us..
  • Yeah she was exactly 2 weeks over, am seeing HV next week so will ask her then. Thanks for advice about scales, probably can't afford them anyway!! Trouble is I think I would feel like a muppet standing on the scales in Boots, oh well I suppose I best bite the bullet and go for it. Am just off to take my measurements now woohoo!!

Consultant, sorry to ask the silly question, but is that 2 litres in addition to any coke, lemonade, flavoured water, tea, coffee, and water drank when training? I'd be in the loo all day if I drink that much

Not counting coke/coffee/tea as they're diuretic and so dehydrate you.
But the flavoured water (hope it's sugar-free) low-cal squash or sugar-free fizzy pop and fruity teas all count. However, they do say that fizzy drinks are quite bad for you in large amounts!
Plain old water is best, but you can treat it with a slice of lime or lemon to make your own flavoured water.
I like mine warm with a slice of lemon - honestly it's nice :D
You will be hopping for the first few days, but that should settle down after a while. If not - look at all the exercise you'll get trotting back and forth :rotfl:
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
