It's extremely easy to make, and cheap too :) I make it at least twice a month....I would make it more, but I'd only eat it :D

The site is also full of really clever main meal and other snack recipes to make when money is tight and you're on a budget :)

    Hi All,

I baked 2 Egg and Bacon Pies with " Dad" on top for fathers day gifts - which they loved - yay ! and a bakewell tart - oh and a large jam tart with left sweet pastry (even used savoury left over pastry scraps as "play-doh" :A)

took and age to do it all and clear up, but worth it as everyone was happy :D

Reminds me of when I made a wartime cake in school with the kids. It included grated potatoe and dried egg powder. It was fun but tasted disgusting.

I've made a cake with ground almonds and summer fruits in it. Really nice and kids like it too.

Going through a bit of a ground almond phase at the moment :D

My late wife reacted badly to rhubarb. "I like rhubarb, but rhubarb doesn't like me," she used to say. For that reason, I don't think I have eaten rhubarb since I was at boarding school.

After my latest shopping trip, I returned home with four sticks of rhubarb. I decided to try this stuff out, because I was thinking of growing it in my victory garden. But I had never cooked it before. What to do? Well, I had heard of Garrison Keillor's famous Be-bop-a-re-bop rhubarb pie -"sweetening the sour taste of failure through the generations." I took some cut-price shortcrust pastry out of the freezer, and left it overnight to thaw out.

This (Sunday) morning, I went on YouTube for a recipe for rhubarb pie. I encountered Garrison Keillor, and then I found a charming West Indian lady called Jameela, who was making a rhubarb pie with frozen pastry. Her recipe had an apple and a tin of fruit. Her idea was to pour the juice out of the tin, and that would cut down on the sugar she needed to add. Ingeneous! All hail to Jameela! Only problem. I had no tinned fruit, and the only apple I had was a pineapple. Do I wait for Lidl to open, or do I use my initiative. I cut up the pineapple and put that in with a little sugar, and, according to Jameela, too much cinammon. I cooked the lot in the pressure cooker at high pressure for ten minutes, turned off the heat and left it to depressurise by itself. I then put it in the enamel basin I use for pies, and draped the pastry over the top. I then put it in the oven for 20 mins at 180 degrees C. The remaining pastry I fashioned into croissants. I put these on the bottom shelf of the oven. I'm sure it's the wrong pastry, but this town is not exactly Budapest.

Well, I tried it. It's delicious. So I shall be growing rhubarb after all. And my guests will be served pineapple and rhubarb pie. I still have a day or two's mileage from Sunday morning's cooking: I have croissant's for Monday's breakfast; I have half a pie left; and I still have liquor left in the pressure cooker, which I will use to flavour some cous-cous.

Made Nigellas pancakes before I went to work.

Had 3oz roast chicken breast left over so grated 1/2 carrot, small wedge of red onion,2oz vermicelli pasta,1/2 tsp garlic puree, ketap manis, sweet chili sauce loaded into rice paper and made 6 nice fat vietnamese spring rolls.

Had 25 cheese slices from staff fridge and 8 cookies for the kids..yay
