I think I will have to try ad not take things to heart as much. I've been trying 30 years so I'll not hold my breath :-D

You'll find many people identifying with that!

Unlike real life I'm rarely sarky on here, however some people (not the OP) are so over-dramatic that it's hard not to be at times.

    Hi,

The think that really frustrates me is when posters don't spell check, use txt speak or don't use sentences / paragraphs, so I can see where Inactive is coming from ...

This frustrates me too. I know we all make little mistakes, and typos, this is true- this is why I recommend everyone who writes a formal letter of complaint checks in with someone else before sending it.

Some people are dyslexic, others have mobility and eyesight problems. But for me that doesn't explain the sheer volume of terribly expressed, difficult to follow posts.

Thing is, though, I can't tell whether someone has a genuine disability, whether they are plain lazy, or whether they bunked off school. So there is a big chance that if you express your frustration with someone who writes badly, that you are going to hit someone who doesn't deserve it.

Spelling and grammar can be such a sore point with some. You can tell by the viciousness and beligerence anything that suggests good spelling is a good thing is met by. There are people who are, shall we say, a little too sharp with their criticism of spelling, this is true. But others who plainly and politely suggest that taking a deep breath, using paragraphs and taking care with spelling may make it easier to understand a problem often meet with the same response as the snappers.

So, we've all got to have a degree in English to post. So that excludes the majority of people having equal rights.

No, it's just being judgemental, that's what it boils down to.
Of course you don't have to have a degree in English .... ??

Using a spell checker is not very difficult, putting things in paragraphs so that the post can be read easier & avoiding text speak should be a must ... after all I don't really understand txt speak, so am I being discriminating against???

To be honest if someone posts that is difficult to read, I will only post a comment about spelling / difficulty reading if I am able to help the OP.

You are right, these are basic life skills. Making out that reasonable, clear writing with most (not all) capital letters in place, paragraph breaks and few (not no) spelling errors is an advanced skill- that's just obnoxious. It's also insulting to the intelligence of the average man in the street.

The things you learn to get A-C in your GCSE Maths and English are basic skills. Pretending they are highfaluting and advanced abilities that out of the reach of "normal" folk is just rude and abusive.

Now putting someone down over their spelling is bad. As I explain above someone may have a disability that excuses their writing style.

But simply pointing out that taking a bit of care over presentation would help people to understand the problem is that rude? No, and it is obnoxious to claim that it is.
