Fresh mobile closing

I've just had a text from my mobile provider Fresh Mobile which is a Carphone Warehouse brand. The text says that Fresh mobile is closing on 19th March 2010.Their alternative offered is Talkmobile which seems significantly more expensive. Any suggestions for an alternative for someone like me whose annual spend is around seventy pounds?

  • 1) Is it mostly calls, or texts ?

    2) Is your current phone unlocked ?

    3) Is your current phone 3G ?

If the answers to 2 & 3 are yes then Three might be worth considering.

If the answer to 1) is mostly calls then Tesco or Asda might be good.

I'd also include giffgaff in your candidates - 8p/min calls, 4p texts, free internet until May, and Family Mobile, with 9p/min calls and 6p texts

Fresh tell me that existing credit on a Fresh SIM card cannot and will not be transferred to Talkmobile.

They also refuse to provide any refund of any unused credit when the brand closes.

Apparently this is in the Terms & Conditions. I pointed out that the conditions the customer prepaid under were that they would have assumed they'd still be able to use their remaining credit in 3 months time, or next year, so closing down is a material change in that.

I'm amazed that a large company can decide to close down a business like this, offer a switch to another brand they own, but just keep the remainder of the cash the customers prepaid into the first one.

I wonder how much it do with the forthcoming demerger of CPW and TalkTalk
  • I've also had a text saying Fresh were closing and offering me £5 freecredit if I changed to Talkmobile. They never mentioned that I would lose all the credit on my current sim card!

I've looked at Talkmobiles rates and they are significantly more expensive than Fresh Mobile. Maybe its time to search for a cheaper alternative!

    Suggestions anybody?

I am in this position too. Is there any way to keep your current mobile number or is it not worth the hassle of trying to contact Fresh for a PAC

I've done some googling and found that Asda, Giffgaff and Tesco Lite are offering PAYG tarriffs of 8p for calls and 4p for texts. Compared to Talkmobile (20p calls and 10p texts) this looks like a 'no brainer'.

You can also keep your current number by getting a PAC code from your current provider! :D

PS I use my phone for calls and texts only. If you need any other services, the above might not apply.

I am fairly certain the Fresh uses T-mobile as the underlying network. However I was just looking at and investigating Talk mobile and it seems their underlying network is Vodaphone.

As I bought a really cheap phone, I think it is only single-band and so won't work with Talkmobile.
I can't even remember my phone's name to work out if is single or dual band.

    Hey ho.

Dual-band phones started to appear about 10 years ago, and most phones have been since then, so unless your phone is that sort of age I don't think you need to be pessimistic.

If you take the battery out, you'd probably find a label underneath with model name and other details. Might need a magnifying glass though.

Yes thanks I have done that. After googling my phone's name, it does appear to be dual band.
