Crucial talks aimed at averting strikes by British Airways cabin crew are set to end on Tuesday with time running out on reaching a deal before industrial action is called.

Officials from Unite have been embroiled in negotiations with the airline for months in a bid to resolve a bitter row over cost-savings, including cuts in cabin crew.

Union members twice voted massively in favour of industrial action, but Unite held off naming strike dates, preferring to continue with negotiations, which were held under the auspices of the TUC.

"On the initiative of Brendan Barber, both Unite and British Airways have now committed to the objective of completing these negotiations by close of play on Tuesday 9 March to determine whether or not a mutually acceptable settlement can be achieved."

The union has until March 15 to announce industrial action, and will have to give seven days' notice of any strikes, although it ruled out any stoppages over Easter.

BA maintains it has 1,000 volunteer staff ready to work as cabin crew in the coming weeks if a strike goes ahead. Mr Walsh also revealed BA will hire 23 fully crewed planes from charter companies to help run flights from Heathrow in the event of industrial action.

It does seem that way! Some sources (I think, union) are now saying that dates will not be announced until next week now. I now have additional insurance in place, complete with excess waiver (my annual policy has £120 excess on cancellation)!

The deadline to reach an agreement has been extended by the TUC, which is chairing the negotiations, to 12 noon tomorrow (Wednesday).

A crippling British Airways cabin crew strike looks inevitable as the airline reject peace proposals from the Unite trade union.

BA said that the union's plans, which included a 2.6 per cent pay cut this year, fell "significantly short" of the £62.5 million savings it was looking for.

The breakdown of talks means that Unite is likely to announce plans for a strike by 13,500 cabin crew within days.

A walkout could be as soon as next Thursday, depending on the decision taken by union officials, who will meet tomorrow to discuss their next move.

Even though Unite has said it will not strike over Easter, the uncertainty over when the union will walk out is threatening the travel plans of more than 800,000 passengers between now and the end of the month.

    Press statement from BASSA:
We must urge British Airways to put its customers first, not in the form of press friendly sound bites but by their actions.

We have absolutely no wish to cause any disruption to British Airways and more importantly for our customers.

Cabin Crew are proud of our airline. We implore Mr Walsh to be part of that pride and to listen to our collective voice, not damage the international reputation of the greatest airline in the world.

We are taking this opportunity to ask him to reconsider the formal offer of cuts we have made and to accept the sacrifices that we and our members are willing to make in order to help British Airways to protect on board service levels for its customers, and so prevent industrial action.

To say that this is about the so-called “survival of the airline” is simply not true. Even by their own accounting figures, which we strongly believe are highly creative, the difference between each of the sides’ proposal is just £10 million. This may sound like a significant sum but for perspective; compare £10 million pounds to a £3 billion pounds a year fuel bill - or the £500 million BA were recently ordered to pay out in fines.

It would appear that far more than that sum has already been spent on trying to break any dispute in the form of wet leased aircraft and blocking of seats on other carriers etc.

Press reports indicate a British Airways employee accused of acts of terrorism, was also one of Mr Walsh’s strike breaking volunteers who were employed to work as temporary cabin crew.

What price does safety have - £10 million?

This is simply not about “cost cutting” - it is about “union busting” at any cost and that truth is now finally there for all to see.

What company in their right mind would refuse the offer of a pay cut from its own staff to protect the health, safety and service offered to its customers?

Before ordinary peoples travel plans are unnecessarily inconvenienced we hope that common sense will prevail and that our offer is reconsidered. The deadline for calling industrial action is very close. Mr Walsh should not squander that time.

Can these people not see how utterly ridiculous they sound? The comment regarding the BA employee who is suspected of terrorist involvement is petty, and just adds to their childish 'we can't win so we are going to start mud throwing' attitude. I have never been a great fan of unions, but if this is anything to go by, I will not be signing up to one at anytime soon!
