  • unite are trying a last desparate throw of the dice ( gambling with other peoples plans, money , holidays etc )
They did not announce any new strike dates as they are aware that they have a very poor position.......... only 63 % of cabin crew voted for Industrial Action and there has been hundreds of volunteers to step in ...........the likelyhood is that if strikes are called for many crew will ignore the action and work normally........Any strikers will have their staff travel priveliges withdrawn permanently.

My understanding is that they must start strike action by the 21st March or they must ballot again. However, once they've started they can keep taking more action (again within a certain time period) without re-balloting (is that a word?)

That is also my understanding. Purely as an example, Unite could call for a strike today, to take place in 7 days time, walk out for just a couple of hours on that date, then call another strike(s) later in March with another 7 days notice. Therefore a further strike could theoretically take place in the week up to the Easter holidays (when they have said that they won't strike) and any time after that of course.

  • the last day they can strike is 22nd march, as thats when the 28 days is up, after that they have to hold another ballot and get the results in for that and then strike if they want to, they cant strike end of march as its against the trade relations legislation because it will be after the 28 days

You are correct in what you say, should they not take action within the 28 days, but please read my post again. They could strike in 7 days from now if they wanted to (provided they called the strike today). That is clearly within the 28 days. Having done that they are free to strike any time later and do not require a further ballot. They could therefore strike at the end of March as well, or before that, or after that, since they would have already taken action within the legal 28 days required.

  • I had pasted this on another thread but I think it belongs here...

We are due to fly to South Africa on the 24th March returning mid April.
Our flights were booked in April 2009 so it was LOOOOONG before any strike was announced.
The travel insurance that I THOUGHT I had is actually only for Europe and expires on 30th March anyway.
    My question is:
Does anyone know which Travel Insurance company is likely to cover us should the flights be cancelled? I have read somewhere that different insurances companies 'interpret' the 'notification of strike' differently.

Also - are we in a position to ask BAA to put us on another airline should our flights be those affected? ie: Can we ask to be put onto SAA or Virgin?

    Any help is greatly appreciated...

    Thanks

My daughter and her boyfriend have booked to go to New York on 28th March. Flight and hotel were booked as a package through the BA website (with credit card). If strike action goes ahead can we be compensated for both since they were booked with BA?

With a package deal you should get a full refund for both the air fare & hotel if your flight is cancelled.

MissBehaving: It may be worth checking out BA's own travel insurance. Not the cheapest, but I am *sure* that they said that their insurance will cover travellers as long as it is booked before the actual dates of strike are announced... Please check with them first before booking though - I am going by memory!

Not the cheapest, but maybe worth it in the circumstances!
