I'm left paying for my ex bf's PC. Advice wanted

When my bf and I were together he tried to purchase a PC from Curry's on HP but was declined. He persuaded me to get the PC on HP and he would then pay me £25.66 each month. Anyway, a little while after we split up. He still has the PC and I have this PC debt of his. I know the account is in my name so ultimately I am the one who has to pay it if he isn't going to but is there anyway I can recover this money that he owes, it's nearly £900. He did start to pay me back a little each month but he seems to conveniently forget. I end up sending him a text message reminding him to pay which he ignores or if I call he either doesn't answer or hangs up.

I know it's my own stupid fault for getting into this situation but if there is any possibilty that I can make him pay the money back I'm willing to try.

Jo.

If you are paying for the computer it's yours so he must either buy it from you (amount in full) or return it right away. If he refuses to return it, he is stealing and you are within your rights to report that. I would file a claim with the small claims court for the amount the computer cost if he doesn't return it.

But you certainly shouldn't be paying for it on his behalf. Time to get tough I think.

i would try to recover the pc and then try to sell it to pay some of the debt. maybe you could visit your local police station to ask them if it is legal for you to go and retrieve the item, and if it is, maybe they can accompany you.

toto is right. time to get tough. if you have to pay for it, it is yours.

btw, how much has he paid on the total?

Thank you both for your advice/response. It's much more positive than I thought it would be.

I would guess that he's paid a maximum of £250, if that. The account got into arrears because he said he never had the money to pay so basically the money he has paid just paid for the arrears on the account.

What would be the next best step, write to him saying he either returns the PC or buys it or go down the small claims court route?

Here's a trick I learnt in the marines. Go to his house and find a pebble and a brick. Right-handed? Good. Hold the brick in your right hand, and throw the pebble at the window of a room he is in. Count to three, and throw the brick. He'll get to the window to see what the pebble was just as the brick arrives.

You're not in a good position, as the second-hand value of the PC is going to be far less than the debt. If he does return the PC to you, he's sorted out his legal obligation without resolving your financial situation. :(

lol @ the brick idea. However much I'd like to do that I don't think it's the right thing to do.

I wasn't sure whether I should just write the whole thing off and just pay it myself and see it as a lesson learned. I certainly won't do it again for anyone. I can't move on properly while I still have to keep in contact with him.

Is it worth contacting him, asking him to pay what he owes you by a specific time & date? & if he doesn't respond threaten him with going to the police and reporting him for theft of your pc. Don't forget, you have all the documentation needed to provide proof of ownership.

I've tried contacting him and when I do get to speak with him he says he will pay but then nothing ever happens so I end up chasing him for it over and over every month. I've said to him if you can't pay then I will accept the PC back but he says no he needs it! I just don't know what to do. The whole situation !!!!s with my head. He's got a brand new PC for practically nothing and doesn't care about what he's done to me.
