Ok, need a bit of help here - I want to cook a small ham joint in the slow cooker (in coke?) but could do with the veg being cooked at same time. Can this be done? Not used my slow cooker for absolutely yonks!
Any help/ideas would be really helpful. Thanks all you wonderful cooks!0 -

Yes you can cook root vegetables with the ham. Also you can cook with yellow split peas.
If you Google"ham joint cooked with vegetables" there are several recipes.
One I looked at was "humble tart kitchen.com/slow cooked ham and vegetables".
Hope that helps(don't know how to do links)
Good luck:)

Hi
I hope you don't mind me asking on this thread - if I need to move it please let me know. Any recommendations on a brand of slow cooker? I am about to buy one and try out some of the recommendations on this thread - I need to save money and also like the idea of coming home from work some evenings to a wholesome hot dinner.:)
I live alone but sometimes have guests. I ideally would also like one which would fit a whole chicken in. I eat more veggie food than anything but occasionally do a roast chicken - it is the only meat that I like. I know there are some which also work as a rice cooker - my rice comes out ok when I boil it, but anything that makes life easier and gets me a healthier/more varied diet would be great.
Thanks for any advice!0 -

I have recently purchased a Morphy Richards slow cooker in a 6.5 litre size, though they do a 3.5 litre size too.
It is really easy to move around as the pot is not made of ceramic,as most are,but made of aluminium. This means that you can use the pot on the hob.
It is really easy to clean too. It's dishwasher safe but really, you can wash it easily as nothing sticks to it.
I have had mine now for a few months and after having used a ceramic type, I would choose this one every time.
The 3.5L is in mr T's for £29.00 and the 6.5L is £33.00.
I think they are called 'Sear and Stew'.
Hope this helps.0 -

I bought a cookworks 6,5ltr for £20 from Argos and it's perfect, and it's cheap! I can fit a 2kg chicken inside, or a huge meal which feeds 16 portions (so I can freeze loads for non cooking days)
For Rice I recommend a steamer (again I bough Argos cookworks) you add rice and water and leave for 45 minutes (it's a long time but well worth it) you get fluffy perfect rice everytime. Highly recommended xWe spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I saw an oval 3.5L slow cooker in Tesco last week for £12, which is very reasonable-not sure if it is still that price.
I have an oval Morphy Richards-which I've used for years almost every week, but I did buy my daughter the Tesco one a couple of years ago, and it seems just as good.:j0 -
Thanks everyone, very helpful. I have a big T's near me so will go and have a look.0
