    I've been Money Tipped!
I've bought my first brisket joint ready to try tomorrow in the SC - do I leave the strings attached or do I cut them off before cooking?

I normally leave them on if you want to carve it, otherwise the joint will break up. Enjoy.

Half a bag of frozen casserole veg, 1 pint beef bullion and 1kg oxtail from a Charolais

Oxtail is overrated, shan't be doing it again, shall stick to shin

I mince my beef shin and you would never know the difference. I find that a single solitary pound of shin in a slow cooker chilli bulked out with lentils and kidney beans can be enough for 15 or 16 meals.

got brisket in with mushrooms and carrots, then one of those beef casserole sachets (morrisons own). been in since 8 and its looking good, hope it tastes good too
  • My first attempt using my slow cooker today!! 300g beef, couple of carrots, celery, onion, mushrooms, new potatoes, tin of tomatoes and a pint of beef stock.

I browned off the beef first then just put everything in the slow cooker on auto. Does this sound OK, and how long should I cook it for? Thanks x

Sounds awesome. I confess I don't time mine, I just cook it til it looks good. Usually I put a stew like this on in the am (by 11am is the aim) and leave it on high until about 4pm at which point I either turn it down until we're ready to eat, or bung in some dumplings for an hour! :D

P.s. if you have a bay leaf, bung that in.

I find several hours depending on whether you cook on high or low heat, I find 7 to 12 hours is perfect. if you have lentils or something that you can see is cooked then that is usually quite a good guide. I never have any set time. I go by what it tastes like.

Verdict is in......the mushrooms and carrots were gorgeous, beef was nice but not quite as soft as thought it would be. It had been in the sc for 10hours on low so maybe it had been in too long?
