Please copy the recipe if it ends up being that good!!
  • Whole chicken on a bed of potatoes, onions and carrots mixed with a tin of tomatoes and a chicken stock cube. Took as much of the skin off as I could as I really don't like the texture that slow cooking gives it. First time cooking the chicken whole like this so looking forward to the results.

    Hi,
Am thinking about investing in a slow cooker and had a couple of questions, I hope you don't mind me popping onto the thread. Did have a look at the index but it seems to mostly look at recipes.
Do slow cookers use less energy than cooking normally or is it only that it doesn't need constant attention that makes it preferrable? What's the benefits to using one as opposed to 'traditional' cooking?

Sorry if it sounds daft but I've only just moved into a house where I can have gadgets like this and I don't want to go crazy buying things that won't get used. I hear so much on the OS forums about these that I thought it might be a good place to start.

    Thanks

I'd be interested in the answer to this question too.

I've just started using a slow cooker I've had since the 80's. All I'm doing is chicken casserole overnight and all morning. Works fine but I'm going to try some of the recipies from the link provided, to get some variation.

How much energy does a slow cooker use, especially an old one like mine - a Tower with 3 settings - Auto, High and Low. Maybe I only need put it on for a few hours instead of all day or overnight.

Syrup steamed pudding in mine today. Pulled pork yesterday. Don't know what I would do without it!

thats sounds lovely, how did you do it?..saw it done by microwave once on tv but only caught the last few minutes where the cook was removing the 4 tea cups he had used. so not much good did use sc to make rice pudding once which seem to come out fairly good but seemed like a dish as easy might just have been done on the gas
  • Homealone- just made Delia's recipe from her winter collection and put the pudding basin on a saucer in the slow cooker and added boiling water to half way up the side of the basin. Cooked for seven hours on high and it was scrummy. The advantage being that I don't need to keep topping up the water and no steamy kitchen!

Lancashire hotpot in mine, recipe is from a Good Food slow cooker book and it looks DELICIOUS! :)

Was a bit faffy to prepare as it involved frying off lamb and veg first and adding flour etc but it looks like it will be worth it! Serving with some nice crusty bread :) I'll report back once done!

First slow cooker effort this year!

Well it really was delicious! Lovely thick gravy and clean plates all round! :) will post the recipe later..

Today I've prepared a chicken curry recipe which I pinched from online:

    Slow Cooker Curry

4 Skinless chicken breasts or 6-8 skinless thighs 2 onions chopped 2 cloves of garlic grated or minced 2 Tbsp medium curry powder 2 tsp light brown sugar 100ml chicken stock 100ml double cream or elmlea type substitute 1-2 tbsp Soy Sauce depending on taste some plain flour 1-2 cups of frozen peas

    Method

Some people fry everything off first before adding to their slow cooker. I don’t simply because mine cooks from 0830 in the morning until about 6pm, so I am confident that everything is completely cooked through and piping hot. Obviously if you can’t do this then you should cook off your meat first.

Put chopped onions and garlic into the cooker

Slice your chicken and roll it in the flour

Add the chicken to the slow cooker

Add your curry powder and sugar

Add the stock and cook on high for approx 2 hours or until your meat has completely coloured.

Add the soy and cream, give it all a good stir and replace the lid, turn the heat down and leave it to it. You can give it a stir and a wee taste occasionally. Adjust the seasoning to your tastes, add more soy, sugar, curry powder.

About an hour before serving add your frozen peas.

Was quick and easy to prepare so is cooking away now, will look forward to that later on tonight and I'll report back! Going to add my cream an hour from the end though as I don't want it to split! :)

It uses about the same amount of energy as a lightbulb so very mse! The facebook page that has been linked is great for recipes really good if your just starting out. Mine is a tesco one and I tend to have it on 6-8 hours as these types are quite hot and cook quickly but depends on which yoj have.
