OK so what am I doing wrong?! Puchased a SC at xmas and used it 3 times -
1.) Chilli - pretty good as followed recipe book
2.) Chicken Casserole - VERY watery, even after loads of lentils. Pretty bland.
3.) Bolognese - water swimming around plate and soooooooo bland!

I have tried reducing liquid content on attempts 2 and 3 but with the bolognese added 2 tins of tomatoes as thought I would need the tomato flavour but didn't help. Added puree, dash of ketchup, herbs, SandP.....

Any suggestions on what I may doing wrong? Any help much appreciated .

Its sounds as though you are putting far too much liquid in to start, and not enough seasoning/flavours. Do you taste as you go along. Try adding 1 or 2 stock cubes.
I know you put extra time on by lifting the lid, but its got to be worth trying to make sure you are going to eat what you cook.

I love celery salt added to chicken dishes.

If you get the flavour right, add a bit of cornflour mixed with a drop of liquid- otherwise the cornflour won't mix properly - to thicken up liquid.

If I cook a chicken in SC, I don't put any liquid in, they usually create enough without, especially value chickens!!!

I cooked a chicken tikka masala in my SC & they all complained it was bland.

I also cooked sausage casserole in SC, they didn't like that.

I cooked stew in SC and they said they prefer it done in pressure cooker.

I cooked roast beef in SC & it fell apart.

I don't know what's going on, but it puts me off using the SC :(

I cook bolognaise in my slow cooker...

    Mince,
    3 tins of chopped toms,
Beef stock cube dissolved in half a pint of warm water
    teaspoon of lazy garlic,
    herbs,
    chopped onion
    Squirt of tom puree

Give it all a good stir and off you pop......

give it a good stir on return home from work, and bingo, beautiful bolognaise!

I also had either a tsp cocoa powder OR a beef oxo cube AND a instead of chopped toms I use passata but thats 6 and half a dozen flavour wise :D

  • I was hoping someone would be able to tell me how I cook a gammon in the slow cooker, please?
  • Everybody was clamouring about using cola, you could try that. I personally use a water with stock cubes, onions, carrots, celery, bay leaf, peppercorns. You can use the remaining stock for soups. Good luck.

Thank you. We don't keep cola in the house so water it is. How much water do I need to put in?

get some own brand cola (big bottle about 47p) and add to slow cooker with chopped onion. Cook for at least 6 hours, longer if on low. This is Foolproof - but Don't get DIET cola, get the one with sugar!

I've done it with pineapple sliced and the juice - was delicious.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
