In my slow cooker today.... part 2

Hi for a whole chicken I usually put in about half inch of boiling water at bottom, and then put some butter over breast of chicken, squirt with lemon juice and sprinkle a little salt and pepper over and leave on low for about 8-9 hours - is lovely. Not sure on the veg front, but I find the juice from the chicken quite greasy so personally wouldn't fancy veg in there as well, but the chioce is yours.
Thanks, thats probably about the amount of water I put in but you end up with loads of juice once its cooked. The veg was pretty disintegrated by the end of the cooking so DH made soup with the bones/juice/veg concoction which was fab and all the family had it yesterday. Not bad a for a reduced price chicken, got two meals out of it and some soup left over for today. I need to try something other than chicken though!0 -
Minced chicken, red lentils, pearl barley, brown rice & carrots. Definitely no onions though as i`m making dogfood to freeze

I thought that sounded quite tasty, until I realised you were making dog food. :rotfl:My dog has meat, and any leftover veg, with his dry food, but I have never thought about making it. Good idea.
Steak and Bean stew today. Rump steak, cannellini Beans, passatta, red peppers, carrots, shredded cabbage, onions, garlic, and seasonings. It needs some red wine, but I haven't got any, so will add later.0 -

...tried it this weekend and can report a success! Browned 6 sausages and put them across the widest bit of the oval dish - on one side was 3 halved tomatoes covered with black pepper and balsamic vinegar. On the other side was lots (37!) of tiny mushrooms with a knob of butter. Tiny bit of water in the bottom but nothing else. Everything was really well cooked and even browned, I think I was concerned about the soss looking too pale and 'flobbery'. The only downside was the smell all night wafting up from the kitchen - way too nice.
There was a lot of liguid in the bottom so will try and raise the soss up next time and am now obsessed with finding an oval shaped roasting rack/cake rack so I can stack up the grub. Will try bacon next time too.
Hope this helps someone on here, I've had a great time reading all your recipes and suggestions!0 -

hi all, got my slow cooker yesterday and made chicken with wegetables. Ended up with too much water in the end, but it was tasty.
I have a question -can I use ready made Chicken tonight sauce in SC? I love chicken with Creamy mushroom sauce, but it contains a bit of cream which should not be used in SC according to manual? So what do you think?0 -
Attempting Rice Pudding.
Preheated and coated pot in little butter. Warmed up 600ml of milk.
Added roughly 100g of Rice..from hair bikers, decided to give basmalti a go.
Added in some Low Cal Sugar - didnt seem to regiser much on scales so poss add little more later.
Near end all going well throw in some dried fruit and maybe part of a crushed cinnamon stick.0 -

I found jars of sauces tend to encrust -if thats a word. all around the edge of your SC pot. due to sugar content apparently. give making your own ago0 -

Have just wolfed down, braising steak cut into finger width slices, onions, mushrooms, gravy and a ten cal onion soup sachet. Served with LO cabbage, LO green beans (from yest), carrots and mash. Not a scrap left as the bit of gravy has gone in the dogs bowl with her dried food.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

If you are giving the gravy to the dog i would leave the onions out when you cook it, the onions will shed a fair bit of juice into the gravy and they are poisonous for doggies. Maybe an idea to see if the soup has onion powder in too. HTH
Sublime - My 2 hounds love it, i think that its the juices from the chicken that they love and even better i got the minced chicken at the local market which has started selling it for petfood, they have this stirred into what ever is left at the end of the day. (dry food which has been soaked in the morning)
Nickynackynoo - The pate is easier to make when the casserole is still barely warm, pour the liquid out first and whizz it up with lots of butter, just add the juice until you get a soft consistency. When it cools the butter will set and it should just be spreadable. I do the same with brisket for potted beef.
My slowcooker has been soaking all day whilst i was at work so now i shall scrub it and put it away for a rest
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0
