  • Planning on doing gammon tomorrow. My idea was to put it on a bed of chopped leeks in case it sticks, and pour cider over. Does anybody have any ideas how to make the liquid into a nice sauce? I was thinking of removing meat when cooked, blending the leeks, cider and cooking juices together, and maybe adding mustard.

I've got a whole chicken in the freezer ready for Sunday, but was wondering the best way to cook it.
I found a recipe for my sc which says:

Take three pieces of aluminium foil and form into 8 to 10cm balls, and place them in the bottom of the slow cooker.
2.Rinse the chicken, inside and out, under cold running water. Pat dry with kitchen roll. Season the chicken with the salt, pepper and paprika, and place in the slow cooker on top of the crushed aluminium foil balls.
3.Set the slow cooker to High for 1 hour, then turn down to Low for about 8 to 10 hours, or until the chicken is no longer pink and the juices run clear.

Does this sound right? What does a chicken in a slow cooker taste like?

Kraftkat - I brown/seal my joint of beef in the frying pan before I slow cook it. Add the seasoning and veggies, and forget about it. I did it for christmas, and it was sooo lovely, it also was the best gravy i ever made!

Thanks Finefoot, I have the beef out defrosting as we speak :D

I've done steak pieces with gravy in the slow cooker and they were gorgeous ;)

    Hi Sui,
    maybe because its Friday?
I have another chicken curry in the magic container today, and I have put in twice the amount of chilli powder (I have beer in the fridge so it is OK).
Will the hard working missus eat it happily tonight, or will she taste it and proclaim "that will burn my bum!"?
    Who knows?

What we do know is - it is going to be tasty!

    Any good sites for recipes??

Yesssss . ........... you are on it.

Basically with the beef and veg chuck it all in switch on and hey presto magic meal, that lasts forever :j Some people brown the meat, but I never do, other than mince to get the fat out.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

Thanks, will look back the thread for tips/recipes. I got a reduced whole chicken today in Asda so I'm planning on cooking that in the slow cooker tomorrow and will leave my stewing steak in the freezer for another time. Carrots underneath, will add tatties and thought I might chuck in some sweet potatoes near the end, they cook quite quickly. How much liquid is the right amount to put in? Do I just use water or a stock cube dissolved?
Total novice to this slow cooking lark!
