    Roast beef in onion gravy.

I had to cook a roast beef lunch for my dad today but hubby, son & I can't eat together until tonight so I sliced the cooked beef & put it in the slow cooker in onion gravy & we will have it with yorkies, mash & veg.

Got my lovely new SC sitting on the worktop but wasn't organised enough today to find anything to put in it so cooked dinner in the oven as usual. Going to the butchers first thing and want to buy a cut of beef. However, don't know what to ask for so some advice please. I usually spend up to £40 per week in the butchers and have got to reduce this amount. I know some people can feed a whole family for this so please advise on what cheaper cuts I could be buying (not just beef) and I'll change my ways ;)

Lamb shanks & ham hocks are fairly cheaper & make good soups & stews.

Beef brisket is a good cheap cut for slow cooking a joint, if you want a good stew, then ask for shin of beef.

    Morning peeps

beef curry in mine last night made with a huge piece of braising steak, smells gorgeous, i`m looking forward to tea later :D

Polly - I`m another who likes brisket in the sc, throw it in with a chopped onion and a can of guinness and the sc will do the rest.

The left over meat and some of the gravy thickened slightly makes a fabby pie.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Pack of reduced price stewing steak, 1/3 bag of frozen cass mix (although I did fry it quickly in the pan that I had just browned the diced steak in), some bisto granules and about half a packet of sausage casserole mix that I had sat in the cupboard.

My husband loves the smell of the slow cooker food (whatever it is!) when he comes home on a cold day so he should be happy as I didn't tell him what I was cooking tonight.

    :D

Got two packs of lamb shanks reduced in Tesco this morning - less than a fiver for both and they've been cooking since 10am and smell divine! Had originally planned to use a big piece of pork loin I also bought (reduced) and although it had tomorrow's date, it smelt foul when I opened it and I had to throw it out. Will go back later for my refund. Will post back after the lovely lamb tonight.

!!!!!!, just went to the fridge to put the sausages in to what was going to be a sausage casserole to find they're still frozen, so might have to take the boy to the shop to buy something I can oven cook and use the sc veggies as the accompaniment.

Just had our first ever SC meal - lamb shanks with carrots/parsnips/onions/peppers and it was a treat. The gravy was to die for and I've already blended the leftover veg (what little there was) to add to a soup tomorrow. I'm converted! Thanks so much for all the great tips. :T
