Got my lovely new SC sitting on the worktop but wasn't organised enough today to find anything to put in it so cooked dinner in the oven as usual. Going to the butchers first thing and want to buy a cut of beef. However, don't know what to ask for so some advice please. I usually spend up to £40 per week in the butchers and have got to reduce this amount. I know some people can feed a whole family for this so please advise on what cheaper cuts I could be buying (not just beef) and I'll change my ways ;)

I often use beef skirt - that's the cut that is traditionally used in Cornish pasties (or sometimes chuck steak). Breast of lamb is cheap but fatty, so you have to skim off the excess fat as you cook. And as someone else mentioned, ham hocks.

Called into Tesco again this morning and picked up large pork shoulder joint, pack of cubed beef and pack of fillet steaks (all reduced) so together with yesterday's buys I'm sorted for the next week or so. It was the same girl in Tesco putting out the reduced stuff and I was a bit embarrassed but what the heck, I've got to save some money! Got a big pot of veg soup simmering away in the SC at the minute.

I've just got a slow cooker-I got an absolute bargain in Waitrose of all places-it was a customer return John Lewis one not in the box and reduced from £40 to £9.95 so it went straight in the trolley. So far I've made a delicious beef stew and bolognaise and it is an absolute godsend for a working mum like me. I'm looking at this thread with interest. I want to try a brisket joint next. I'm addicted already!

Today I've got gammon steaks layered with fresh pineapple and red/green peppers, covered with cream. Been cooking on high since 2.30 pm and smells gorgeous. My teenage son is going up the walls with hunger and the smell is driving him mad!

    and a can of guinness

..... that's like using 'left over wine' - no such thing left over for cooking.

However, if I ever have a 'spare' can of Guinness that sounds like a great & tasty idea! (I may see if my dil has one, as she is pregnant and unable to drink any at the moment).

  • I managed to make some lovely Lemon Curd today :D and it was sooo easy

In the past my SC has only been used for the odd braising steak and stew.

Might make a big batch nearer christmas as pressies

All this from a total idiot in the kitchen too :o

I use my slow cooker for making casseroles and soup but OH and DS complain that sausages and meatballs have an awful paste like texture when cooked in the slow cooker.

I buy good quality 95% pork sausages and make my own meatballs with lean steak mince, does anyone else have this problem or know how I can stop this?

I do brown the sausage and meatballs before I cook them, I dont eat meat so cant comment on what they taste like

    thanks
