Hi
If I cook bolognese sauce in the slow cooker, how long would it need?
I have the choice of low or high settings (no medium).
TIA0 -
I bought an 800g smoked gammon bit from Asda yesterday and want to cook it in my SC.
I have no coke, no veg, or anything, but I do have maple syrup, honey and mustard powder.
What should I put in the SC along with the gammon - how much liquid? Also, how long should I cook it for?
Sorry for the million questions - I am skint this weekend so need it to work as I cant afford to bu another one!!
Thank you!:)0 -
Hi Tartan
I am cooking an 1.8kg smoked gammon joint today - also for the first time. I have put some carrots on the bottom of the slow cooker to 'lift' the meat away from the base and added about 1inch of apple juice, was gonna leave it on low all day.
Honey and mustard spread over the gammon sounds good to me and either plain water or some stock if you have any should work.
Good luck

Hey, I'm looking for a bot of slow cooker advice! Ok, I'm using up stuff around my kitchen. Mainly carrots and onions from fridge. Defrosted 'smoked' ham hack from freezer and a 500g bag of Morrisons country style soup/stew mix.
I have 2 slow cookers one big one (I think 6.5 litres) and one smaller one (I think 3.5 litres)
Here is my plan for it all..........
Put ham hock in large slow cooker. Top up with cold water and stick on low all night to cook ham and flavour water.
Also, soak whole bag of broth mix in pan of water over night.
Tomorrow morning. Remove cooked hock from Slow cooker and stick in fridge (after cooling)
share ham cooked water/stock between both slow cookers. Go on a massive chopping spree with my carrots and onions and other bits and bobs and share between both slow cookers (I have loads).
Add soaked broth mix between both and then top up with water.
Cook all day on low.
At last hour add about half the ham hock shredded between both cookers (Keep rest to munch on/sandwiches)
I have a few questions!
After soaking broth mix should I also boil it up and simmer before adding to slow cooker to cook all day or will it be fine after being soaked all night?
Am I doing the right thing? Will it work? Does anyone have any other ideas/tips or help?
Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have had a new tesco's own slow cooker as I killed my Morphy Richards one by sticking cold water in when hot after I emptied it - naughty I know, it cracked. Anyway, this tesco one seems to have one temp setting of 'high' and it boils the life out of it after about 2 hours. The warm temp is for keeping food warm but if I set it to that would it cook but just slower? Long winded tonight aren't I! Thanks0

My mum usually does it in the pressure cooker so it kind of melts and thats what she likes, but I don't have a pressure cooker so maybe i need a different kind of beef? help! I can only order my shopping online so I cant have a look and compare the packets!
Sorry this may be a bit late, but I always use 'shin of beef' for stews - it's a coarse grained meat that looks full of 'gristle' but the gristle melts away during cooking (if you cook it long and slow) leaving a lovel flavourfull tender meat. If you have ever eaten a can of stewed steak, that's the cut they use. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
I have a couple of questions about my soup I am making (posted above)
Do I need to boil up dried broth mix before using it in slow cooker? (it's been soaking all night)
Also, I have a ton of carrots to use up. SHould I chop them for he soup or grate them? Oh, whilst I'm on the carrot question. If they are clean, is there really any need to peel them?
Ta!

Hi,
It might be better if the broth mix goes into the slow cooker as a hot liquid mix.
When I make soup with carrots/potatoes,I always grate them. They take less time to cook and I prefer that consistency.I scrub carrots/potatoes with a nail brush and don't bother peeling them.(I hasten to add that the nail brush is only used for that purpose!).
Well I haven't used my slow cooker for a while, but today I'm doing my Christmas pudding in it.A first attempt.
Anyone else doing their Christmas pudding in the slow cooker?0 -
Thanks for that! Hey, you must let us know you you get on with the pudding!0
