Having been inspired by the thread I purchased a shiny slow cooker yesterday and had pork with apple and carrots with a cup of Cider over the top - It made the nicest pork so I'm looking for some inspiration for what to put in there for tea tomorrow night.

I have some mince, a leg of lamb, some chicken, limited herbs, fresh carrots, potatoes and some frozen veg too - can anyone suggest something easy for a beginner?

congrats on your new sc! I'm sure it will save you money and time. How about spag bog sauce in it with the mince? A chicken stew would be nice but beware of cutting the spuds too big as in my experience they take a long time to cook.

I'm doing soup out of a chicken carcass we had roast chicken yesterday, loads of veg and dried soup mix and hm bread will fill us up and keep us warm tonight.

  • I freecycled my SC as everything tasted 'chemically' and I really am more of a Remoska person, but have got an old one-speed SC from my late Mum and am bravely doing some of Mr M's pork cheeks with onion, celery, carrot, stock, bit of wine. I plan to put some prunes in later (we love them in pork casseroles) but please could a wise SC user tell me when I should add them ? we aim to eat at about 7.30 tonight and I put pork on at about 10.30 this am

are they dried prunes? I'm not sure when to add them but would give them longer if dried.

  • I have found that slow cookers vary quite considerably. I had a SC back in the 80s but it was so slow that I gave it away. I decided to give them another try and about 3 years ago I bought the 3.5L from Lakeland but it was so slow. I found that on auto (4 hours on high then switched to low) it had to be used overnight for 12 - 14 hours. I then bought one of my sons and his wife a Cookworks 6.5L. I had the opportunity to try it out and it was brilliant. I have now bought myself the same Cookworks SC. I can set it off in the morning and have a cooked meal 8 hours later.

My conclusion is that it can take a while and some expense to find the right slow cooker to suit your needs.
