  • I've got some game stew in mine at the moment. Diced game packs were two for £6 at Mr T's, which I felt was quite a good price.

Has anyone seen the M&S ad which mentions the slow-cooked gammon and puy lentil dish? I was thinking about trying that out but last time I tried to make a pea and gammon soup in the SC it didn't turn out so great so I'm nervous of using the whole gammon joint and possibly wasting it. Does anyone have any tips for gammon in the SC?

There is a thread on the 'bargain buys, sassy shopping' board at the moment about cooking gammon joints. You might find it interesting and helpful- its under food shopping and groceries.

Today I something other than rice pudding! 3 casserole steaks, 300ml of Guinness, 1pt of beef stok, 1 chopped onion & a bouquet garni. Mushroom will be popped in later & then transfer it all to the oven with dumplings in for the last 45 mins. Hope it tastes OK - never done it before.
  • Haven't cooked anything in a slow cooker for ages (years even) as my old one (which was my Grandad's) seemed to cook things to death. So in recent years the SC has just been used as a device to keep things warm eg when doing a hot buffet.

However, bought a new one (still got the old one for warming uses) a couple of weeks ago and today have taken the plunge with a small smoked gammon joint.

Took some tips off here and put onion and carrot in the bottom, the gammon, and a mug of water. Have put it on low as it will be cooking for about 10 hours before I get home. At which point I will turn to 'keep warm' (a feature I have never had before).

Would have liked to use cider - but didn't have any - if this outing is successful could get some cider for next time! mmm!!!

Hope it turns out ok - but nervous...
