Caroline - Asda were out of eggs too - they had some value ones left but I also only buy free range so went without. They are limiting milk to 3 bottles per customer which seems a good idea. Everything else was well stocked but it was just mad in there - queued for ages. Am so glad that is over.

Came home to find that although the boiler seems to be working all the rads have gone cold:eek: so am on the phone to British Gas and will see when they can book us in - think I have an insurance thing with them that if they can't come out for a certain time they put us up in a hotel. We will see .

It was fine last night in Sainsbo, apart from the eggs, don't think they were limiting milk but we buy UHT at the moment as fresh seems to go off so quickly, it's no fun waking up to coffee with a brown congealed lump at the bottom ! We didn't buy too much so used one of the 'scan your own' checkouts, but even the regular ones weren't too busy.
I hope BG manage to get out to you quickly, it can't be much fun without heat at the moment!

Just a thought; have you tried bleeding them? Ours went lukewarm a couple of days ago for the first time in years. Took ages to find the key but it worked a treat.

  • Oh dear, just had a bit of excitement, if you could call it that. Our neighbour is an elderly lady who lives alone. I know her vaguely because she is collecting the post for the people who used to live here. I thought that I hadn't seen her around recently so thought I'd better check, and am doing a Sainsbo order so wanted to see if she needed anything. I opened our front door to find an older lady I don't know standing outside of her door, I asked if my neighbour was around and apparently she'd fallen behind her door when she went to answer it and couldn't get up. This other lady didn't have a key. She eventually managed to get up the strength to open it so she got settled in her chair, it turns out that she'd been in hospital and had caught a bug so had been in isolation for a week! She's also diabetic and had previously had it controlled by tablets but is now having a nurse come round to give her injections every other day, so she thinks that her body is just adjusting.

She said that she had enough and would be ok, but I told her to let us know if she needs anything. If we can't get out then it must be much worse for her. I think I might pop my mobile number round so she can call if she needs anything...

    Good afternoon chums,
well another cold and snowy day for a lot of us. My neighbour's husband Ian knocked this morning bless him to see if I needed anything, but I was o.k. My lovely son-in-law Simon appeared with the three little boys, and whilst he went over to get some bits from the shops I fed the little lads boiled eggs and soldiers for their lunch followed by some grapes and some left over chocolate bisciuts from Christmas.
I always seem to get boxes of biscuits given to me at Christmas which is very nice, but I am not a great biscuit eater, apart from Twinks hob-nobs which are to die for. I do prefer HM ones ,fussy old bird I know, but the boys always are usually on hand to' help me out':D
Simon brought me back a newspaper, so I will have the Jumbo crossword to keep me going over the week-end. I shan't be going to DD's tomorrow for dinner as the roads are far to thick with snow and ice and I would rather keep my old bones in one piece than several, and end up clogging up a hospital bed.I am very lucky as I am warm and have plenty of food and milk, and even a few bottles of plonk indoors if I fancy a splash of wine at dinner tonight.
I am having some steak and the rest of my cheese salad bowl with a jacket spud for my evening meal with some nice brie and biscuits for pudding.
I have got a small joint of beef out of the freezer and shall put it in my SC overnight tonight for dinner tomorrow.

Thank for the compliments, but I have far too much to do, and I don't think my memories are worth the effort really, they are just ramblings of an old gal who has probably lived too long :rotfl:
I stick things down for my grandchildren at times, and the little ones are facinated that I grew up without a t.v. or fridgefreezer or microwave. But I survived, and although I had a very happy childhood I don't see the past through rose tinted specs.
I can also remember the poverty and cold of winters (especially 1947) and how women struggled when their husbands had lost their job, or during the war their lives.I think life was probably tougher after w.w.2 in the 'austerity of the late 1940s early 1950s' .My Mum could never understand why although the war was finished, she seemed to be worse off. But today life is wonderful for a lot more people, although those struggling to pay mortgages and raise their families in todays straightened circumstances would probably not agree.Times were so different and our expectations were a lot less I think. We didn't expect a great deal so when something came along that was to our benefit everyone was chuffed.
My Mum sat and cried in 1954 when the food came off the ration but it was no more plentiful than it was before.
I enjoy my life now, and would love to see what my Mum would have thought of todays 'luxuries' To her, being able to afford half a crown to get her laddered stockings mended was a luxury. There was a lady who sat in the window of John Hoods the Cleaners in Lewisham,London, who spent all her day hunched up over a tiny machine that fixed ladders in stockings. My Mum swore this poor woman would probably end up blind in the end as it was such intricate work.Anyway enough of my witterings.I hope everyone is safe and warm indoors and to those who feel a bit down and sad have a <<hugs>> to the rest of you have a good weekend and keep wrapped up warmly.
Happy Birthday to Mummysaver and to anyone else who has a birthday today
Take care all, we are all precious to someone

    Afternoon all

Well my book club was quite good. We chatted for an hour about the book (which none of us had actually finished!). We have chosen to read The Bell Jar by Slyvia Plath for next month. I also got 3 other books out to read.

After book club I met my friends for lunch at La Tasca - used the 50% off voucher :) and then came home.

    Afternoon all :)

    Happy Birthday Mummysaver!

We have had quite a nice day so far.

Still stuck in the house - and more snow this morning, but we're warm, and have enough food, plus DDs are still able to see friends, so we're not isolated.

I supervised DDs at lunchtime, while they made both chicken noodle and french onion soup, which we had with sliced fresh baked baguettes. The french onion was absolutely :drool:

I've got a wash that needs doing, mainly towels from showers, ect, so will get that sorted shortly. Apart from that, everything's pretty much taken care of.

Hope everyone's having a good day and ((((HUGS)))) to those who need them today :)

    hello

another 2 inches of snow overnight and away to the frost now, seem to be feeding birds all day, a neighbour who doesnt have a birdtable tacked a half melon skin to her fence and filled it with seeds and cheese, a good idea i thought

managed to get to the library as the buses were running ok and ordered the hairy bikers book, got road tax and half price spread from the co-op
ds1 came up with catfood in case asda cancel again

Jackie0 as ever enjoy reading your post, my grandparents never had electric or running water just an outside toilet and a tin bath, all my summer holidays were spent there and a treat was to go down the bottom of the long garden with granny to the trees with a flask of tea and a biscuit, i never had any toys there but didnt need them

a stone hot water bottle at night but gran and grandad were cosy in their box bed with a chenille curtain drawn over and the range still warm

meals were cooked on a two ring gas stove and we always had lemonade with dinner a great treat and remember taking the kettle outside to scrape the soot off it, everlasting happy memories

the grandparents who brought me up had all modcons, at the weekends milk came straight from the cow not put through the seperater so you could skim thick cream off the top to make crowdie

but enough from me :D toasty hugs to all xx
  • Afternoon, well I've had a busy day in the kitchen, currently have 3 loaves prooving, made some Twinks (my first time and oh my gosh they are delicious!), made some broccoli and apple soup (DH and I had some for lunch and have frozen the rest. Whizzed up the end of the old loaf of (HM) bread to make breadcrumbs and have frozen. Just about to start making dinner.

    Happy Birthday Mummysaver :bdaycake:

Essex girl - hope you've got some heating now

Pink - hope your home safe and sound after your rounds

    Have a good evening everyone
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)
  • carolinosourus - at least your neighbour fell while there was someone there who knew what'd happened. It would have been terrible if it'd happened when she was alone.

JackieO - I really enjoyed reading your 'rememberings' and I *do* think people would be interested in them. Have you thought about writing or taking part in an oral history project?

It's a wee while since I've been here (Christmas and my own shopping addiction got the better of me) so I'd like to thank you all for being here while I slid back into debt. If you hadn't been here then there would be nothing for me to come back to. If you kind of see what I mean - sorry, have a migraine starting and words are coming out wonky.

It's an NSD for me today (barring unforseen circumstances between now and bed time!) I've had the heating on all day but really can't face another day in bed with the 'lectric blanket and the cats. It was fun the first day but is wearing thin now.

Looking forward to being a more active participant and faithful moneysaver!
