Hi there i need some advice please on some credit card fraud on my card. it happend in october and there about £200.00 of transactions on my card in october from places such as blahdvd and cdwow, always small amounts. i had a phone call from the the credit card and they have said that the IP address on these transactions match the IP address on a transaction that we made with sainsburys online.

Both me and the wife dont recognise any of the transactions and havent received any goods either and they have asked me to double check but i know what I spend and none of them are mine. I'm not at the forefront when it comes to computers and I know a IP address belongs to a computer but could it be someone is using my computer via our wireless network, i dont understand how the numbers can be the same.

not sure if the CC are just fobbing me off in the hope that i just pay for it all.

thanks

if you are using a unsecured wireless network then yes someone could quite easily be using your network and hence your ip without your knowledge, also if they have hacked your network they could have gotten your card details that way as well
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

ok, i run some virus software on my comptuer and didnt pick up any viruses on it i'd have to check the wireless network then, i'm not sure it is protected as my brother in law connected her laptop upto it when she come round and didnt ask me for a code (i'm sure of it) unless she found it out from my computer before setting his up.

Just because the IP address matches one you bought something from sainsbury's on, it doesn't necessarily mean it's YOUR IP address. Did you buy something using someone else's PC, or a work PC or, God forbid, a public PC?

You also need to quickly check if you wireless network IS secure or not. What make of router do you use?

I'm more intrigued by how they (your bank) even know this to begin with. Unless you went through something like "Verified by Visa" at Sainsburys AND the dodgy sites, which would also mean they know your password to that as well...

thanks for the repsones, I knwo your all going to flame me know but we did use a public computer when we went to Great ormand street (coffee bar type place). And the credit card did mention something abotu two of the places had additional security to pass which is the verfified extra password, and as i said to the credit card when they issued me a new card they never mentioned that and I still have the same verified code that i did before. Surely the credit card can speak to the merchants and find out where the items ordered where delivered too as we havent had anything and it just seems we are the easier ones to get to pay for it all.

Unless you specifically request a static one, IP addresses are reused by an ISP so you could have a IP address one day and the next it can be used by someone else on your ISP. Your ISP may have records of who was assigned a particular IP address at a certain date/time, but won't release them without a court order.

This is worrying though (I mean about it not asking for a code, not that you call your brother in law a she):

If you are using XP, try this to see if it is secured:

Start --> Settings --> Network Connections
    Right-Click on "Wireless network connections"
    Select "View Available Wireless Networks"

The one you are connected to, does it have a Lock and say "Security enabled wireless network"? If so, does it say WEP or WPA afterwards?

EDIT -re-reading your post, it is not clear if you are talking about the wireless network at your house, or your brother-in-law's

Is this where you did your Sainsburys online shopping from?

I suspect the CC company are fobbing you off. They couldn't request IP and transaction details from a company without police involvement. (Unless they have the verified by VISA etc transaction tracking), still I find it unlikely they'd offer up that detail to you first.

Although O2 have dynamic IP addresses in practice from home you will always have the same IP (it is "sticky" and only changes very rarely).

Transactions made over public WiFi will have a different IP.

There is no great mystery that the CC company recorded the IP address used for the various transactions because that is what they do. It doesn't mean that the various vendors have any info on your IP passwords or inside leg measurement either come to that.

If the CC company said the same IP was used for multiple transactions then pound to a penny that will be your home IP and the problem is an unsecured WiFi connection. Access through that may well give access to data on your network which may include credit card details or it could even have been "sniffed" live from the WiFi packets.

Although using public WiFi for financial transactions is a big nono I don't think that was the problem here.
