Although a long-tme user of this forum, this is my first visit to the Ebay section. I have to say it will probably be my last, as the attacks on the OP are shocking - some of which are by a board guide too! I'm totally gob-smacked this thread has been allowed to continue in this manner; I'm sure elsewhere on MSE it wouldn't have been allowed.

I never fail to be amazed by the Board Guide's attitude on here, that's why I don't start threads any more.

Ive bit my tongue up till now, but that snidy comment was un-called for.

Board guides are only here to help with the house keeping of this place, they aren't here to give advise from any point of view but their own.

If you disagree with their opinions that fair enough, but dont make out like they should be agreeing with everyone, holding the OPs hand and telling everyone what they want to hear  just because they are board-guides.

The only reason this thread seems 'nasty' to some is because they are being told what they dont want to hear !

    Not for long :)

I'd have negged you as soon as it became clear that you weren't going to refund under your own steam.
Paypal chargebacks can take a very long time.

Add to this the fact that we know that this item was bought before christmas (christmas stress, possible present) and I'm not surprised the buyer was a bit short with you.
A buyer should never have to wait that long, and you know you wn't win so you are clearly just edging it out to annoy your buyer. Very professional

As for the person who got annoyed with their buyer becasue they were on holiday.... well.
Note or no note, I have to wonder why there were items on your ebay while you were on holiday.
    That is particuarly annoying.
This is my opinion. There are many others like it but this is mine

I have been very lucky in that I have never had to claim back from RM as the only time something was damaged it wasn't expensive so I agreed an alternative with the buyer and sent that BUT if something isn't delivered/arrives damaged does the recipient have to provide any evidence for RM to this fact or is it just the seller? If the recipient has to coroborate that it hasn't arrived then I would always keep good communication (which I try to anyway) or they might refuse to help!!

Since this is aimed at me, you can have your reply.
The point of ebay is that when you buy something you read the terms of the auction. I came back off holiday a day after the auction ended and as a goodwill gesture stated that i would be on holiday until x date so that there would be no surprise that the item wasnt sent out same day. Not that what i do with my time is any of your business and i certainly dont see why i should have to explain what i do with my time to anyone. - most auctions are listed for 7 days - and since it is possible to delay the listing time etc these days, there really is no excuse for not reading the auction particulars properly.

Lots of responses saying the 15 days is nothing to do with the buyer, it's just Royal Mail, you wouldn't be happy if a company did that.

Well, this practice is actually quite common. Play.com for example won't even talk about a missing item until the 21 days has passed, and even then they don't refund/replace immediately. A signed form has to be sent to them certifying the item has gone missing and then they wait for Royal Mail to investigate before taking action.

I think the OP is entirely justified in their action in this case, and is offering a refund a darn sight quicker than some other places!
  • I don't expect sellers on ebay to be like a big professional business. I think of them as ordinary people like me and I wouldn't expect them to be at my beck and call over the christmas period or hold them to the same rules as a big business. Having said that, even big businesses don't refund after 3 days just because you send a ranty email do they? The person who mentioned QVC policy was spot on. A refund takes ages from them, and you have to fill in a form and wait 28 days.

    But you can stop them.
Just don't get why anyone would ever list while they know they are going to be on holiday- it's asking for trouble.

I can see both sides of the story and sympathise with both buyer and seller but I do feel that this thread IS rather nasty in parts and regardless of the actual duties of Board Guides, they should post in the forum in a manner which is not unfriendly or intimidating. A manner which invites other users to join in. Some users need to realise that their tendency to jump down peoples throats puts people off starting threads and potentially stops them finding the info they need - which is why I believe this website was created in the first place!

This isn't the first time I've found the Ebay boards on MSE to be unfriendly and whilst I've had some lovely and extremely useful replies, I've also read some replies which were just plain rude.

As Lisa points out, the majority of Ebayers are just ordinary people trying to scrape together a few quid - and isn't that why we're all here?
