What would happen if the OP refunded the impatient buyer much earlier as cybernob suggests
Childish aren't you (Says a lot about you, you dont agree with a point of view so you start making up silly names). Anyway if you actually read what I said I said to refund about 2 weeks which should be sufficient for 99% of post to arrive no matter with a few days bad weather

If it turns up and buyer declares it has arrived then they can repay the item. If it doesn't turn up, or indeed the buyer is a bit dishonest and doesn't bother to tell seller that book has turned up then seller is none the wiser and will still get their RM refund.

The buyer was screaming blue murder 3 days after payment, sending abusive messages to the OP. Would you expect a nutter like that to play ball if the item did eventually turn up? The OP is not wet behind the ears; quote "Am a long time seller on Ebay, (seller fb over 2500, 100%), ". Would your advice be the same if the OP had sold a £350 i-phone? Your advice generally is to stay within ebay rules in order to stay protected, yet you advise the OP to go out on a limb with no protection whatsoever.

There has to be a time limit for refunds,AGREED
a RM claim can't be started until 15 working days AGREED
and probably won't be paid out until at least another 3 weeks after that,
I cannot see any buyer waiting that long, can you? WHERE HAVE YOU DREAMT THIS LITTLE GEM UP FROM? IT'S NEVER BEEN MENTIONED IN THE THREAD ANYWHERE.

I would never neg a seller for an item lost in the post,EVEN LESS SO FOR AN ITEM DELAYED IN THE POST I would however neg them for quoting RM policy at me, which is nothing to do with the buyer, and/or ignoring my contact through paypal.

Personally the abusive mails from the buyer wouldn't bother me in the slightest. By the same token I can understand any person not wanting to deal with anyone who is difficult and abusive. Look at the hissy fit cyberbob has had to me making an innocent Freudian Slip with his name.

As I said, the OP is no novice. 2,500 positives tells me he / she is a decent seller with a good understanding of dealing with reasonable buyers. He / she wanted advice on dealing with a difficult buyer

In my opinion, the issue with the 15 days is nothing to do with the sellers ability to make a claim, but the fact RM still consider an delivery 'viable' up to that time.

It could arrive after that as well, the thing is at what point is it reasonable to refund the buyer and when is it ever reasonable to totally ignore them?

Personally, no matter how revolting an Ebay customer is (and they can be the pits), you cannot ignore then. The more revolting, the more you shower with kindness!

For £3.99 I would not even be writing this thread. I refund/replace for much more with less problem. But then I am a bonafide PROPER business.

As a seller, your task is to get your item to your customer as quickly as you can. If it's late/lost, then you foot the bill and bend over backwards to replace/refund QUICKLY.

    Hi

Am a long time seller on Ebay, (seller fb over 2500, 100%), and recently had a buyer who bought a low value item (£3.99 inc p&P), which was posted (POP obtained) day after payment rcvd.

Long story short, three days after payment, v abrupt and unpleasant email rcvd saying item not rcvd. I replied, v polite, explaining Xmas post etc, should arrive soon. Since then, three further v rude emails rcvd, I replied each time very politely eventually explaining that RM would not consider item lost until 15 days after expected date of arrival (which is approx 6th Jan). Also sent link to RM website to corroborate info, and offered full refund on 6th Jan if item not rcvd by this date.

Anyway, 23rd Dec, buyer starts item not rcvd dispute. I ignored. This evening, further unpleasant email rcvd. I have ignored. Dispute not yet been escalated to claim, he has till 12th Jan to do so.

What I want to do is completely ignore this moron, am more than happy to take neg feedback hit. My question is what happens to my seller account if and when he escalates to a claim (and, obviously, wins, as I don't have trackable postage). Assume I don't get suspended for one infringement?

    Thanks for any advice

Im actually quite shocked at some of the responses youve had back OP.
Like you, i also sell items on ebay, although granted, not half as many as you!!

Re the above, ive had a similar situation about a year ago with a buyer - i was on holiday at the time the auction ended, this is stipulated in the auction memo and stated that items would be sent out 3 working days after i returned from holiday. Sure enough, 2 days after the auction ended, a snotty email arrives in my inbox demanding an explanation as to why the item hadnt been received yet, and that if i cant fulfill my responsibilities as a seller then i shouldnt be selling things on ebay!!.

I replied stating that i was on holiday and if he'd read the auction properly then he would know that nothing would be posted out until i got back. Another 3 snotty email followed - i put it down to someone who was just rude and wanted to complain about nothing.

I replied back to all of his emails and stated that since i was back on x date, the item would be posted within 3 working days. Whilst its good that youve offered full refund, id say that whats probably making the buyer mad is that you havent responded back to them. Send them an email asking if theyve received the item yet and try to smooth the situation over. If a buyer of mine was complaining that they hadnt received something, i would always respond back to each of their emails, just to keep them in the loop. However, i also wouldnt refund before RM had their full chance to deliver the item.

Maybe ebay's not the place for you if you don't want to abide by their rules then.

At least we know why sellers complain about getting negs when the rest of us can't understand it.

If you want to play at selling on ebay then by all means come up with whatever strange rules you want. If however you want to run a proper service and look professional then at least try and act like a professional seller and not a newbie.

I always thinks it pays to look at it from a buyers point of view sometimes. Sending lots of irrelevant bumph about RM claims for losses after 15 working days seems a rather odd thing to win a buyer over.
