thanks luci that was what i needed to know
whilst waiting for some money to clear in my account to book some flights i had a quick look on thomas cook flights + hotel and they have flights + paris for 9 nights for £1490 - the flights are with continental there (connecting houston) and united on way back (connecting toronto). anyone have any experience of these airlines & what their transatlantic flights are like? are there any drawbacks by doing it this way - am i less likely to get upgraded in the hotel as i booked through a third party. i know there is more flexibility if done seperately but its def cheaper for this thomas cook deal.
i think i have over-thought this whole thing lol!

Just as much chance of a upgrade using the $20 trick if you use a travel agent i would think . don't sweat on that , People here who have used the $20 trick at Paris , say it's probably not worth it .

9 nights @ Paris for £750 each sounds like a good price to me if you were going to pay £700 each for just flights with Virgin .

United are a good airline , never had problems with them , even got a free upgrade once . if they are using a 777 for your flight grab 2 seats on their own next to window ASAP . call them up if you have too .

i'd be prepared to jump on that price PDQ as you will be gutted if it goes up . Flexibilty is one thing , but saving cash is what we are all about here , and your getting a very good hotel and some good flights for that . Job done ! .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

haha i know i will be gutted - thats been happening to me for weeks - as soon as the money clears in my account im gonna book it - will feel so much better to have something booked and can start getting excited. do u mean its not worth trying the $20 trick cos they wont go for it or cos the rooms are not worth it?
i wonder what the continental and united flights are like?? im hoping not too cramped cos my other half is 6'3!!! hoping his knees wont be by his chin the whole flight! presumably if im just connecting in toronto i dont need a canada visa or equivilent - we both have british passports - anyone know?

Canada have the Queen on their money , just like us :D. i don't remember ever having to get a Visa to visit ( though i may have forgotten ) . Thomas Cook should be able to advise on getting the connecting flight when you book .

    doubt it would be difficult

RE: Paris rooms. i think it was Stoneman and Ferf who stopped there . nothing wrong with the rooms , just that the upgrade was not much different than a standard room if i remember correct .

United flights we have took (3) have all been fine .

I find expedia usually match or are cheaper than Thos Cook so double check with them. (and don't forget to claim -or even use nectar points with them if you're a Sainsburys girl)

We got upgraded twice, once to a Red Room, which wasn't worth it, once to a P room, that's the one you want. Much bigger than standard and either situated at either the far ends or next to the lifts, both good locations. If all you want is a strip view room just ask for it without tipping, if you want a P room, you have to ask for it specifically, don't just say "any chance of an upgrade". that is the main thing to remember when you are going to try the $20(in our case $40 if staying 7 nights) tip, ALWAYS do a recce of the types of rooms that the hotel has and ask for that type by name

has anyone got any moneysaving advice on Golf in Las Vegas? None of us will be taking any clubs out there, so wondered if any of you guys had hired clubs, and which are the cheapest but best courses to play?
Ask at Angel Park if they still do free club rental if you have a flight stub. They ran this last year and we took them up on it once. AP is our "home" course when in Vegas, 2x 18 hole courses, try the Mountain course as opposed to the Palm, much better greens. Prices will be on their site but pretty cheap for Vegas. There is also a par 3 course that has 12 holes, I think clubs are only about $10 for that, and it is floodlit.
There is also the municipal course on Washington, good deals for the mornings like breakfast and 18 holes for $40.Again phone up about club rental. All courses include buggy rental in the price. Oh, and if playing in the summer be off the course by 11am, you will fry!!

BTW Stoneman - noticed you were thinking of cruising - are you aware you can get comp cruise deals with NCL based on your Harrahs activity?
Thanks, yes we have booked with NCL, 3 nights Bahamas in November. I phoned up CAS and they said I didn't have enough play to comp anything really, but they are giving us drinks cards, whooo!!!

ooooh ok stoneman thats good to know cos i was gonna do $20 but we would be staying 8 nights so i guess i will go for $40 then. is it worth mentioning we are getting married mid-week so this is our honeymoon too- dont wanna get turned down and look silly lol!! do you have more or less chance of getting an upgrade if you are staying as long as 8 days? i always make the mistake of reading trip advisor reviews and there are some really bad ones for paris but i keep telling myself there will be bad reviews for every hotel in the world - cant please all the people all the time afterall! its nice to know what people on here think of it though - it seems like its a good deal for a cenre strip hotel esp if i can get the upgrade to a fountain view p-room :)

p.s just looked at their rooms on their website - their standard room looks quite dated compared with their red rooms - but the p rooms arent listed - are they referred to as something else/.
